How did you get your child on a schedule?

My daughters bedtime schedule is always changing. One week she'll go to sleep around 6pm wake up around 2 am, another week she'll go to sleep at 7 am and wake up 4pm. I haven't the slightest idea how to keep her on a regular schedule, how did all of you do it?

Haha, I only wanted to know, because everyone else tells me how important it is to start them young and yadda yadda. I'm a stay at home mom, so, her being on one never really bothered me much bc her schedule is my schedule. But with everyone ( family, friends ) telling me that I should, just got me wondering how other people do it. I can't see how one could put a child to sleep if the child is not sleepy. Thanks Veronica for your opinion, it's nice to know that I am not alone.

Schedule?? LOL that's really a laugh. I have read that schedules help nurture a child. But I cannot conceivably put my baby on a schedule since my husband and I work full time and in retail. His schedule is now a bit more steady, but mine varies every day since I'm a supervisor and I we have a 3-week work rotation. I have a 12 year old girl. whom I never had on a schedule either. You cannot feed a child at 3pm every day if they are not hungry at 3 every day. I don't feel a schedule is necessary, it helps because changes occur all the time. If your child is set to a specific schedule then they'll expect it every day, but if something comes up they'll be upset. Babies will tell you when they're hungry and need to be changed. As they get older is when you should put them on a schedule, especially when they start school. My daughter knows when she needs to go to bed and when she needs to get up and what needs to be done when she gets home.

If you feel you need to put her on a schedule, then I would start putting her on one when she starts sleeping through the night consistently and work from there.
