How many naps are normal for a 13 month old?

It's nice to see so many of your babies also get up at 8-9am and don't go to bed unilt 9ish. I was starting to worry that my routine was out of sinc with everyone elses! Ive spoken to so many Mums who's babies wake up at 6am and go to bed at 6.30 pm. I will hav e to change this in January though as I return to work part time. My son is 13 months old and sometimes naps from 11.30- 12.30 then 4-5 but is sometimes only having one nap a day now from 1.30- 3.30 as he doesnt seem tired until then. He usually sleeps all night though.

Jordan i would not let him take a nap after 5 because around that time should be dinner my sister taught me that my daughter had a very hard time with sleeping at night she wouldn't go to bed til about 3 am so she had to sleep in i broke that quick i would say if he gets up at 9 i would do like a little breakfast lunch snack then maybe play for a while and let him go to sleep after lucn that way he is going to bed around 8 or 9 will be easy on u probally so u can get some sleep too . i think kids should probally have one napp a day but some do have two..

I would suggest to do what works for your family and your schedule... and enjoy the down time while it lasts. :)



I would politely tell your mother that you kid is happy and healthy, and that if you feel you need advice she'll be the first one you turn to for it.

At that point my daughter was taking two naps a day also. She's wake up at about 7am, take about an hour nap at 11 wake up eat lunch play and she would take another nap at about 3 for about 3 hrs. It's totally normal! It wasn't until she was about 15 months old that she got one nap a day, we had to get her to transition to that because that's all daycare would allow. Now she's 31 months old and only takes one 2 hr nap.

there is no normal sleep pattern for a child this young on average children of this age take two naps a day but it depends on how much sleep they have during the night and also if they are unwell or not hope this has helped you

my son sleeps twice a day and around about 9pm goes to sleep. Im all for more naps not only for myself but for his growth, plus dealing with a grumpy 13 month is not good

my son is up all the time between 630 am and 730 am,, he always goes for a nap around noon,, for a good 2-3 hours,,, then he is up the rest of the day until between 830pm and 930 pm,, and it all starts over again,,lol.

I don't think your son sleeps too much. The growth hormone works only when sleeping, so its healthy for babies and toddlers to sleep this much. My daughter goes to bed around 9 o'clock and doesn't wake up until 11 or 11:30. Because she sleeps so long at night she only has one nap around 4pm and she'll sleep for a couple hours and then back to bed at 9.

If he wants to sleep, or needs the sleep, let him sleep. Mine sleeps about 10-12 hours at night and 3 hours of naps a day (usually broken into two naps).

Sounds about right, around here at least. DS sleeps for 11 hours during the night, and takes one nap around 1 usually an hour or so. He'd take another nap in the evening but he'd stay up until midnight. Daddy dearest lets him take 2 naps but he is the same if I only let him take one.

My daughter usually takes 1 to 2 naps a day. She gets up around 9 or 10 and takes a nap from 12 to about 1:30 and usually another around 5 or so. Babies like to sleep. It's what they do. If my daughter is cranky, I put her back to bed and let her sleep until she is more cheerful.

My son is almost 14 months, he still has 2 naps a day, he usually wakes up between 7;30 and 9 once he wakes up he has his breakfast and plays for a little while and then takes about a 3 hour nap once he wakes up again its lunch time then plays for a few hours and then takes one last nap sometime before 6 I never let him sleep past then and then its bath and in bed by 7:30.

hi jordan my son will be 14 months on the 6th of august and he wakes up between 8and 9am then has a nap around 11 stays asleep for anywhere from 45min to an hour. eats lunch plays has a afternoon nap around 2pm or 3pm gets up plays sometimes hell take another one earlier in the evening if hes tired but all in all he take 2 to 3 naps a dsay all depends on him so dont worry your doing fine my son is normally in bed at 9pm

Tyler goes to bed @ 7 or 7:30 then wakes up about 6-7 but he will take his nap around 9-12 but then he will take another nap around 3-5 but the hours very i find it kinda depends on how hard him and his sisters play threw out the day.If they dont play very hard he will only take maybe one nap

my 13 1/2mnth old girl wakes at 7ish the goes back down at 1030 till 1130ish then a afternoon sleep from 2-3 sometimes 3.30 then bed 730-8 she has alwys had that bedtime since 3mnths old
my boy on the otherhand he is 3.5 and as a baby he never liked to sleep he wld hav 1 45min power nap at the age of 10mths and had dropped that at 15mths unless he was sick or real tired

My son usually wakes up anywhere from 7-8:30am. He will take a nap around 10-12 then another around 2-3. He goes to bed anywhere around 7-8pm

I think all kids are different. My daughter is 13 mos. and is definitely transitioning from 2 naps to 1. Some times she will seem very tired and take 2 naps, but most days she takes one. Her schedule is: Wakes up around 6am, naps from 12:30-3 approx. and goes to bed at 7:30pm.

Some where I read that during sleep, babies bodies release hormones that make them grow. So if your LO is sleeping a lot, he's growing a lot! :) Tell your mom not to worry about how many naps your 13 month old is taking!

My 13mo son is the same as Katrina -
7am wake up
9.30-10ish nap (45mins)
2pm-4pm nap
7pm-7am sleep
but it also depends on what we're doing. During the weekdays, daycare only provides him time for one nap from 12-2 so I try to let him have a 20-30 minute cat nap around 5-6 before he goes down for the night otherwise he's way too grumpy.

My son wakes up around 7 or 8, and naps in the afternoon around 12:30 or 1:00, and then wants to nap again around 5:30 or 6:00. He usually goes to bed at around 11:00. (A similar schedule to your son). My opinion is if he's tired, let him sleep, as long as it doesn't affect him getting a good night's sleep it doesn't matter how many naps your 13 month old takes.

There is no 'normal' when it comes to sleep or most activities! Your childs sleep patterns will vary depending on what happened thru out the day, which will in turn make the next day different.
My son is on a similar sleeping schedule
He takes a nap between the times of 12-3, sometimes he sleeps the WHOLE time && others only 30 mins... then another between 5-8, again he sleeps the whole time or 30 mins.
Then goes to bed between 10-12pm and wakes up between 9am-11am...
....

I don't think it's possible for a child to get "too much" sleep as long as they are awake long enough to eat enough and get enough exercise and play time in! They are growing everyday and will be more tired certain days! My daughter has gotten on a routine of a nap from about 11-2 and then a short one from about 6:30-7:30 and then she's up until 10 and sleeps til about 7:30 am. But it's never quite the same! Sometimes when I put her down at 7 she sleeps until 6 or 7 the next morning!

My daughter wakes up at 7am she has 1 nap per day. She naps at about 11/12 for an hour and a half. She goes to bed at 7pm.

She used to have 2 naps a day one at 9:30 and another at 2pm but then she would only go to sleep at about 9pm-9:30pm.

my daughter is almost 13 months and has almost exactly the same sleeping schedule. I thought that maybe she shouldn't be sleeping that much (although I enjoy it lol) but her doctor just said that some babies are sleepier then others and I should just enjoy the down time :) Hope this helps!

My son was 13 mo old on the 6th of July. We have the same pattern. He is up 8/8:30...goes back down around 11:30/12 for about and hour or so. Then back down around 5 for an hour then in bed by 8:30/9. If he doen't get it...he is CRANKY! Just be thankful becuase I have a feeling in a couple of months to a year....he will be bouncing off the walls:)

My daughter gets up between 5:30 and 7 and is ready for a nap within an hour of getting up. I think this nap will disapear when she starts sleeping through the night more regularly. She takes an hour nap then, one before or after lunch and another one later in the day. So on a good day, it's 3 one hour naps. Sometimes she will take longer naps and sometimes she will take a few little 30 min naps. I just go with her mood and her level of energy and if she needs to sleep, she sleeps. She goes to bed between 6:30 and 7:00 at night but does not sleep through the night. If I'm lucky, she sleeps until 4:30, but usually she wakes up by 10 and then every few hours for the rest of the night!

Its hard to say what's the "normal" number of naps a 13 month old should take. My 13 month old son wakes up at 6 takes a nap from 11-12 and is in bed at 8 and I have a friend who has a son 2 weeks older than my son and her son takes 4 naps each an hour or two long and doesn't wake up til 10 and goes to bed at 11

I have read that most 12-18 month olds have 13 3/4 hours a day. 11 1/4 hours at night and 2 1/2 hours nap time during the day. My Son wakes at 6-7am and goes down for a nap 10-11:30am and 2-3pm. He goes to bed at 7pm and wakes at 6-7am. Exact same schedule for my other son when he was a baby. Hope this is helpful.

My daughter was born on June 30th and my daughters routine is waking up at about 6:30-7 and taking a nap around 9 and then taking a nap around 2 and then she is in bed by 8:00 most of the time. I don't think there is such a thing as too much sleep for a baby. They are constantly growing and so they need the sleep. I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding how many naps your 13 month old is taking.

My son loves to sleep. Up until about 9 months old, he had 3 naps/day. He's almost 13 months old now and sleeps about 11-12 hours/night and gets 2 naps/day of about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs. each.

Typical daily schedule:
Up between 7:30 - 8:00 am
Naps from 9:30/10 to about 11-ish
Lunch around 12/12:30
Afternoon nap from 1:30/2:00 - 3-ish*
Bedtime between 7:30/8:00.

I'm leery about letting him nap too late in the afternoon b/c we want to make sure he goes to bed at a reasonable hour.

A lot of people comment that he sleeps a lot, but they say don't argue with it if he wants to sleep. I'm a SAHM and have had him on a schedule since about 4 months old, so that is the advantage as well. Kids in daycare seem to usually nap less for various reasons.

if your son is tired let him sleep. i've had alot of people on my back about taking my daughter down to 1 nap a day, instead of two. but i dont agree that 1 nap a day works for every child. I know alot of kids that are in daycare that only take 1 nap a day and that works for them in that situation. But my daughter definately needs her two naps a day still. it works better for her and for us as a family. Right now she wakes up between 830-9am and then goes down for a nap around 11-1130 and sleeps 1-1.5hrs then she is up for the afternoon then goes down around 4 for a 1-1.5hr nap again then she is awake until she goes to bed between 8:30-9pm. She can go without the afternoon nap, but its hard and she usually starts getting grouchy around 730ish then, but will not go to bed, we've tried, she will not fall asleep until her usual bedtime. I tried for a few days cutting her down to one nap to see if she would do it, and it sucked, for both of us. the first couple days she was so overtired she barely napped at all, maybe 45min. then the couple days after that, she started to nap longer, but she would lay down around 1230-1(right after lunch) and nap until 4pm. but then out entire afternoon is shot and we cant do anything, plus then when she woke up she was grouchy and then didnt want to go to bed until closer to 930-10. So i just decided to keep her on her 2 naps a day. Some days her afternoon nap is shorter, but she always takes one, no matter what.

My son has been ill recently so he's been napping an awful lot! However usually he wakes up at about 6-7am and then takes a nap at about 10-11 then another at 3-4, then in bed by 8pm. Thats the routine im used to so i do try and stick to it as much as possible, because if i don't it does mess him up for the night and it takes me ages to get him to sleep!
I don't think your baby is sleeping too much you know best your his mum and if he is tired at those times then so be it... :) and anyways they do most of their growing in their sleep so sleep is good regardless!

My daughter is 13months old and wakes up at 7am, nap at 12 till 2 or 3pm then bed at 7pm and luckily for me sleeps the whole night through. It was the same for my other daughter who is now 3. I'm a very lucky mum with two girls who sleep well. Having said that I think it is best to go with your instincts and watch your childs behaviour for signs of tiredness and work with that. Your the childs mum (not your mum) so you know best just remember that. good luck.

My son was born on the 24th. He just started taking one nap a day. It really depends on what time he gets up. He normally wakes up at 7 and then "sometimes" go down again around 9:30-11ish. Then, takes another nap at 3-430ish. He is in bed by 8 (this is regardless of how many naps he takes).

Today's schedule (one nap):
7am-wake up
11:30am-2pm- nap (fell asleep in car, ate lunch when he woke up)
8pm- bed for night

hey my daughter is almost 13months born june 30th, and she wakes 6.30-7am..nap at 10am for 1 1/2hours and then a 2nd nap at 3pm for 1 1/2hours latly she has been sleeping longer in the morning 2 1/2hours and not wanting her afternoon nap but still goes to bed at 7.30pm and sleeps right through

My son wakes up at about 7 am, takes a nap from 10 till about 12 or 1....and goes to bed by 7 pm.

Every child is different, if he is sleep that much and still sleeping through the night, he obviously needs it!

My daughter wakes up around 8 or 9. She will have a nap around 12 and then sometimes have one around 5 or 6. Naps last from 45mins to 2 hours. Then bed time is at 9:30. Everyday is different for her.

My baby girl is almost 14 months and she is a once a day napper. Usually, her sleep pattern is:

9am wake up
1pm-3pm-ish nap (sometimes 1 hour, sometimes 3 hours)
10pm down for the night

I am fine with this and she is fine with this. I follow her cues, as how could I possibly know how much sleep she needs? She will sleep when she needs sleep and will be awake when she's awake.

The only thing that would concern me is if she was sluggish when she was awake, as that might be indiciative of an underlying problem. But if your baby is happy and developing, then let her sleep how much she needs to. The averages published in books are just that, averages. Some babies need more, some less. But, you don't want to keep your baby awake more because sleep deprivation can cause a decline in development.

I think your son sleeps fine. From what I've searched, read & experienced kids of 1 & 2 years need 10 - 13 hours of sleep. My daughter sleeps at 10 and wakes up a little before 12 noon. She then takes a nap from 3:30 to 4:30. And she does not wake up duing the night. If your son wakes up too much and takes a lot of time to get back to sleep in the middle of the night, then he's sleeping more than he needs to at other times.



I also have a 3 & 1/2 year old, and a 2 year old, and both of them don't need a nap anymore.



I think you don't need to worry about how many naps your 13 month old is taking, some kids are more active than others & need more sleep as well. :)

Depends on what time you want your baby to go to bed at night, if you are happy with him going to bed at 10pm then his naps are about 'normal' if you want him to go to bed earlier then just try cutting out his last nap and he will be ready for bed about 7ish.
Bubba's are recommended to have no more than 3 hours sleep during the day.

my daughter loves her sleep too. she usually only has one nap a day, but it'll be at least 2 hours, sometimes 3 1/2. then she usually sleeps about 11 hours at night. i agree with everybody else, if your baby is happy and developing, then let em sleep when they want!

My son is also 13 months. He wakes up around 7ish, then goes for a nap around 9 for 1.5 hours. He then takes his lunch time nap at 12.30 for about 2.5 hours. He goes to bed at 7 in the evening and sleeps the 12 hours till morning. I think too, that they should sleep as much as they need. If we are doing things so he can't have one of his naps, he's not a happy chappie, and i then have problems during the night.

My son has two naps still. Alot of my friends kids lost there 2nd nap. My son hasn't yet. He sleeps from 11-1 and 4-6:30ish everyday. He goes to sleep at 9ish and wakes up around 8ish

My daughter is basically on the same time exact schedule! Sleeps 12 hours at night and then takes 2 naps both 2 hours long. That's so funny you posted this because a co-worker said the same thing she's sleeping too much!! I think we should consider ourselves lucky to have such great sleepers! There is nothing wrong with our babies, they are just busy growing babies!!

hi your mum sounds like mine giving lots of advice and making me feel abit crap...i must of been a perfect child. my twins get up around 7ish them go to nap 9.30-10.30ish for between half an hour -2hrs (mine arnt great night sleepers they wake each other up) then have a nap anywher between 2ish-4ish for about 1hr or so then usually in bed b4 8.30pm. but as eveyone says it changes daily we r in the tranistion stage.
