How many naps are normal for a 13 month old?

My son usually wakes up around 9 and then takes 2 naps a day.One from 12-2 or 3 and then one from 5-7 and then goes to bed at 10. My mother keeps arguing with me that he sleeps to much, but I feel if he's tired let him sleep. How many naps should a 13 month old take? What is everyone's opinion on this subject?

my son will be 13 months on the 17th. we have a weekday schedule and a weekend schedule. during the week we get up at 6 he takes a nap around 830 for at least 1-1/2 hrs. then again at 12-230 300. then another around 530 and we have to wake him at 730 for dinner and bath then back to bed at 9-930 and sleeps thru the night. our weekend schedule is amazing! he sleeps til 9-10am then nap 1-4 and another around 6-630 for at least an hour or so and again has to be woken for dinner!

Hi there,

For my little one it depends on the day and what we are doing, but our normal routine as such goes like this.

7am wake up
9.30-10ish nap (45mins)
2pm-4pm nap
7pm-7am sleep

Some days he only had 1-2 45mins sleeps other days he has a big 3 hour sleep in the middle of the day..but i never let him sleep past 4pm and he always goes down at 7pm.

My wee girl was 1 on the 30th June. She has recently just changed her sleep pattern. She usually gets up anywhere between 6-8am and will go for a nap about 10/11 for 1.5 hrs and thats usually her till her bed time which is any where betwwen 6-8pm. At night she sleeps at least 10hrs.

As previously said they are changing all the time so I would do what you feel is right for your son. As long as he is happy and developing well I dont see the problem :-)

Hi Jordan, there is no such thing as 'normal' when it comes to babies sleeping patterns! Some days my little one will have 2 naps (one 45mins and the other 1.5hrs) and then sleep 10.5-11hrs at night, other days he will have 1 nap of 1.5-2hrs and sleep 12hrs overnight. He is also 13 months and changes daily. When he goes to daycare he only sleeps 45mins for the whole day and then 12-13hrs overnight. The literature says babes between 1 and 2 sleep between 10-13hrs a day (including naps) but that is just an average! If your bub likes his sleep then as you said let him sleep - don't mess with something that is working!! There is nothing worse than messing with a baby's sleeping patterns and having an overtired baby on your hands!!

Some where I read that during sleep, babies bodies release hormones that make them grow. So if your LO is sleeping a lot, he's growing a lot! :) Tell your mom not to worry about how many naps your 13 month old is taking!

My son wakes up around 7 or 8, and naps in the afternoon around 12:30 or 1:00, and then wants to nap again around 5:30 or 6:00. He usually goes to bed at around 11:00. (A similar schedule to your son). My opinion is if he's tired, let him sleep, as long as it doesn't affect him getting a good night's sleep it doesn't matter how many naps your 13 month old takes.

Its hard to say what's the "normal" number of naps a 13 month old should take. My 13 month old son wakes up at 6 takes a nap from 11-12 and is in bed at 8 and I have a friend who has a son 2 weeks older than my son and her son takes 4 naps each an hour or two long and doesn't wake up til 10 and goes to bed at 11

My daughter was born on June 30th and my daughters routine is waking up at about 6:30-7 and taking a nap around 9 and then taking a nap around 2 and then she is in bed by 8:00 most of the time. I don't think there is such a thing as too much sleep for a baby. They are constantly growing and so they need the sleep. I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding how many naps your 13 month old is taking.

I think your son sleeps fine. From what I've searched, read & experienced kids of 1 & 2 years need 10 - 13 hours of sleep. My daughter sleeps at 10 and wakes up a little before 12 noon. She then takes a nap from 3:30 to 4:30. And she does not wake up duing the night. If your son wakes up too much and takes a lot of time to get back to sleep in the middle of the night, then he's sleeping more than he needs to at other times.

I also have a 3 & 1/2 year old, and a 2 year old, and both of them don't need a nap anymore.

I think you don't need to worry about how many naps your 13 month old is taking, some kids are more active than others & need more sleep as well. :)
