My little one naps all day long. she is 6 weeks old, and has 1 hour periods of wakefullness, and then its back to sleep. My issue is she only sleeps for one 4 hour stretch at night, otherwise, its just 2-3 hour naps. I'm thinking that she is sleeping too much during the day to be tired ehough to sleep longer at night. I have tried to keep her awake for longer periods, but this usually doesn't work out, she will cry louder and louder until i swattle her and rock her back to sleep.

So is anyone elses little one sleeping this much during the day?

Any suggestions on how to alter the routine so she sleeps longer at night?

is anyone lucky enough to have a baby sleeping through the night at this age?

My son is 11 wks old and sleeps for about 8-10 hours at night. He now takes 2-3 naps during the day. They range from 1-3 hours. The trick is to not let your baby sleep for more than 3 hours at a time during the day. This helps the day/night confusion. Its hard to wake a sleeping baby. Try undressing or tickleing. Believe me, I did this with my 3 children and it helped alot!! Good luck!

I thought daytime not sleeping problem only for me .. looks like all most of the June babies are same.. Mine started not to sleep during the day time when he was one month and still the same. He is having cat naps if i keep him in my arms. Sleep about 6 hrs at night mostly wakeup for one feed. One day he went 8 hrs.

my little girl is 11weeks old she has been sleeping through the night since she was 5weeks old, she had her night and days mixed up for the 1st few weeks it was really tiring.she would sleep 5hours at a time and wake up for 30mins for a feed then sleep another 5hours,during the night she would sleep for 2hours then feed for 30mins and she would carry that on all night.to get her out that routine i would wake her up every 3hours during the day and she would feed for 45mins.at about 7.30pm i bath her then give her another feed for about 20mins both sides.after that she stays awake for about 20mins and then i wrap her and put her too bed, usually by 8pm sometimes 8.30pm.it took 4days too get her in this routine but it was all worth it.she now sleeps from 8-8.30pm too 7am.its great.

Mine goes through 3 hour cycles during the day. Eats, awake for an hour or so and back down for 1 1/2-2 hours. Then all over again. He sleeps 8 hours every night. My suggestion is to try not to feed her to sleep. Try to get on a routine where she eats, then is awake, then sleeps. When she does that then she will learn to put herself to sleep so if she wakes up at night she dosen't need you to put her to sleep she can do it herself.

Their nervous system doesn't work like ours, the longer you keep her up the more overstimulated she can get causing her to not go to sleep as easily, or for as long.

Good luck, hope this helped.

Your baby is still adjusting to her own scheduale. Most babies sleep at this age from 18 to 20 hours a day, but every kid is different. you do not need to keep her up during the day, just at the night time let your little one wake up on her own and soon enough she will be sleeping longer. Just be patient.

i go by the golden rule of 2hrs awake = 1-2 hrs of sleep.

we start our day at 6am... usually get in three to four naps a day for no longer than an hour usually. then bed at 6pm.

my bub sleeps until midnight-1am then has a feed. then sleeps til 4am has a feed and goes down til 6am when we get up and do it all again.

keeping babies awake too long during the day isnt recommended as it makes them over tired. the best thing i did to help my girl sleep at night was establish day and night routines.

day time = bright light, noises and usually a trip outside. somedays i cart her from car to pram and back again when im doing all my tasks. i also dont let her nap longer than 2 hours during the day. some afternoons i will let her sleep for 3 if its been a big day.

night time = being awake at 4pm bath, feed and bed at 6pm with no lights and a quiet house.

seems to have walked for me.

your little one might be going through a growth spurt. at 6 weeks my girl slept no stop for 4 days. hope you managed to get some good sleep at night soon.

My son sleeps just like your daughter. I too, have tried to keep him up during the day...no go. I have decided to let him keep this pattern until he's a little older or until I find something that works. Good luck.

It's nice to know others have a sleepy baby also. My little one is 6 weeks and will sleep a good majority of the day. She will only go 4 hours in between feedings and is up once during the night for a feeding. I try to go to bed with her around 9:30-10:00, that way I at least get a few hours of straight sleep.

Benjamin is 8 weeks, I have noticed that if I feed him later he wakes more often. Last night and two nights ago I fed him at 10pm(I formula feed) and both nights he slept until 6am. Night before last I fed him at 8pm, so I woke him before I went to bed at 1am and fed him, he woke at 4am. So I am going to stick to the 10pm feeding. As for day time sleep, he sleeps a lot still, he wakes up for a bottle and plays around for 30 minutes or so. Now he will lie in his bed and watch his mobile for about an hour. He is wanting more interaction....and thank goodness pre-school is starting for my 3yo(he will go M-W-F) and I will have just one on one time with him.

Good luck, she will get on a good schedule soon.

I wouldn't recommend keeping your baby up during the day. Babies NEED sleep at this age. By keeping them up during the day, you are essentially making them overtired. When they get overtired, unlike adults who can just lie down and sleep, they get more revved up, and it just makes it that much harder to get them to sleep at night. When they get overtired the hormone cortisone is released which basically makes them wired, and then its usually an hours long process to get them to sleep at night. My daughter naps throughout the day - a short 1 hr nap in the early morning, up for about 1 or 1 1/2 hrs, then naps for about 2 hrs, and so on and so on. She sleeps up to 5 1/2 hrs at a time at night and she is 7 weeks old. I was trying to keep her awake during the day and it was a nightmare getting her into bed each night when I did this. Now it is getting easier because sleep begets more sleep. Read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child", it's really informative on baby sleep. Hope this helps!

I am having somewhat of the same problem, and for about a week my son who is also 6 weeks, slept from 12 at night til about 5 or 6 in the morning, but he recently stopped doing that. I noticed that when we go out for the better part of the day he's not sleeping as much and he'll normally sleep for me longer at night. I don't know how to keep babies up during the day because everyone was telling me the same thing, to try and keep him up, but now he seems to sleep pretty good early at night like from 9pm until 2am and unfortunately for me I don't go to sleep that early. My son also sleeps alot during the day so I just nap with him when I get a chance, but it's hard because I also have a 10 year old who I have to take care of as well, but like my mother in law says it won't always be this way so I guess in our cases we just have to enjoy this special time and try to sleep when the baby sleeps. Oh I almost forgot I had a friend of mine who told me she used to give more formula at her babies night time feeding and she used to sleep longer, don't know if it works I haven't tried it yet, good luck!

My 8wk old son Jayden catnaps for about 30mins at a time most of the day but usually has a 5-7hr sleep from 4pm then he is up again at 10 or 12 then again at 3:30am from which point he will only catnap again. Which makes him grumpy and tired again very quickly.

My little one is 6 weeks old too and he does the exact same thing as your little girl. He wants to stay up all day and be awake at night. He only has a 3 hour stretch in the night so you are getting more sleep than me! I am going to start trying to keep him up during the day so he will sleep longer!

My 8 week old baby sleeps very little during the day and only wakes once at night to feed. This is very different than my first son who slept all day and all night form birth. I think it just depends on the kid. I also have no luck trying to wake my son ever. Just try to be patient. Most babies learn eventually. I know how hard it is to be patient when you just want a good night's sleep. Good luck.

well.. my 7 week old son tyson sleeps all day and all night. 4 hours at a time, he wakes up to eat and thats pretty much it. he also wont fall asleep unless im holding him.its so hard to keep an infant awake during the day to keep them sleeping at night, im sure you know. i have heard of doctors recommending cereal as early as 5 weeks. you could try that right before bed time. just dont give a lot to her at one time. ease her into it. i havent tried it yet but once i go back to work i will. i hope to help. i feel your pain! i cant get anything done!
