Just wondering how much milk you moms are giving your lil ones now? It seems like up until a year there were fairly good guidelines, but now I don't know if there's a specific amount to be giving them. Also, are you using formula? Homogonized milk? 2%?

Thanks for all the advice!
My lil guy is drinking a lot more than that...and isn't a great eater at meal times. I think I'll cut down on the amount of milk and hopefully he starts eating better!
Thanks again :)

My pediatrician said 15oz. a day with meals, which averages out to 5oz per meal. There are days when this is enough for my daughter and there are days when she just wants more. If she needs more then we usually give her about half of what she had the first time and if she still wants more then we give her water. I'm sure the fact that there are times when she gets more isn't hurting her since it's only 3 times a day. She goes in for her 15 month check-up at the end of the month and I'm planning on asking, I'll fill you in if I hear anything different!

i just read online from the what to expect website that you should give your child full cream milk until 2 years and then switch to semi skimmed (2%). They should be drinking no more than 24 ozs of milk and 6 ozs of juice/water other wise it interfers with their ability to eat solid food, therefore deminishing the amount of nutrients the child in getting. My son used to drink 3-4 8oz bottles and a little water, now I have cut down to no more than 18 oz of milk and I do not limit his water intake, he drinks juice here and there but I was not keen to get him hooked on the sweetness thus I stuck to water mostly. I have definitely noticed and increase in his appetite, he used to eat 3 times a day and rarely snack now he eats 3 times a day plus 2 - 3 snacks, he has also beccome a food begger, lol it means he is curious about what anyone else is eating in the family and wants a taste, if its good you must share if its not he makes a funny face and runs off, lol. Good luck mamas

the canada food guide says 2 8-oz cups of milk per day, they also say toddler from age 1-2 should have homo milk, after 2 they can go to 2%. my daughter drinks 2-3 8-oz cups a day, and she drinks 2% because we were having problems with her throwing up cows milk a couple months ago and so we're sticking with 2% shes healthy and really doesnt need the extra fat.

My pediatrician recommends 10-15 oz per day. As long as they are getting enough dairy throughout the day they should be okay. We are basically training them to eat and drink like we do at meals etc. Don't foreget everyday is different. Some days my daughter wants a ton of milk and then the next day she wants nothing to do with it.

Hi Beth, I have realised that what is recommended depends on which country you live in as doctors seem to differ. I am in Australia and have been told NO MORE than 3 cups or 750mls (24-25oz) otherwise it starts to interfere with their iron absorption. Most American doctors (and websites) recommend 2 cups a day (16oz) - this may be a minimum. The less milk the better as long as your little one is eating enough (eg. gaining weight and sleeping well and happy) and getting some calcium alternatives - yoghurt, cheese, etc. My little man (15mths) is having no more than 500mls a day now that he has decided food is better - he still has his morning and evening bottles but drinks from sippys for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea if needed. We have normal full cream cows milk as my bub gets a good balanced diet so formula isn't necessary - it is usually recommended that bubs have full cream milk until their 2 year check up then if weight is an issue to go on 2% milk until their 5 year check up and then it would be skim milk, but I do know of some mothers who doctors have told them 2% is fine for their bub.

my pediatrician said that he needs at least 16 ounces. my son drinks way more than that, probably around 24 or so. They are suppose to have whole milk until the age of 5, unless the baby is overweight. It is important for kids to have the fat for brain development. (Also, look for food with DHA, such as fish, yogurt and even some cereals have it added now).
If you babe doesn't like milk, I would suggest using the formula formulated for order babies.
Hope this helps!
