My 5 month old boy weighs approx. 13 to 13.5 lbs. He was 6lbs 9 ozs. at birth and is still exclusively breastfed. He's only in the 5th percentile for weight and 10th for height. But, he continues to follow a good curve at each check-up so the doctor is not worried. As long as your baby is growing/gaining at a steady rate she should be fine. Check with your pediatrician if you are really worried. I imagine if he/she were concerned about the growth rate they would have mentioned it at your last well baby check-up. Remember, babies at this age should be getting the majority of their calories from breast milk or formula (not baby food). Baby food/cereals don't need to be consumed in high volumes as the do not contain the calories/fat a baby needs for proper growth and development.

My litle girl is 9 months and only 15 pounds. She is just petite. If you are concerned ask your pediatrician they will tell you their opinion. That is what I would do!

You may have a small (petite) little girl. I was small for my age but very active and healthy. As long as your child is meeting her milestones, I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep your doctor informed.

Solid food and cereal isn't as high in calories as breastmilk or plain formula. Depending on how long you've had her on solids, it could be she's filling her tummy with too much lower calorie solids, leaving no room for higher calorie breast milk or plain formula. Have you talked to your pediatrician to find out where your little girl is on the growth charts? If she's always been small, it may just be that she'll always be small. If, however, she's in a lower percentile than she used to be, you may need to change how much liquid vs. solids you're feeding her. Other posters mentioned "long, skinny babies". I have one of those; but my little girl is in the 20% percentile, and is 14 lbs. I'd talk to your pedi, not just post on here. Good luck.

Don't worry, my daughter is the same size (5-7th percentile). She is healthy and has been consistently in that percentile since she was born (2 1/2 weeks early). My doctor is not concerned since she is consistent and hitting all of her milestones. She says she's just petite! My husband and I were both born more than a week late and weighed less than 6.5 pounds. As he put it, SOMEONE has to be in the 7th percentile! Don't fret as long as she's healthy and consistent! Look on the bright side, at least we don't need to worry about childhood obesity yet!

My daughter is 13lbs at 5 months 1 week. She was born a tiny 4lbs 7oz. I think all babys are different and grow and deveolp in their own time. My daughter is eating right, rolls over, giggles just like any 5 month old :)

My son was 13 lbs at his last appointment at 5 & 1/2 months which s under the bottom 3rd-5th percentile while his length was in the 50th so halfway between the long and short. His weight is a concern but I'm small and so is his Dad and it's more than likely just genetic. Still we're having some tests done to be sure there's no underlying condition causing the slow weight gain, like cystic fibrosis or a thyroid problem. He is breatfed and nursed all the time - every hour or two usually - up until the past couple weeks when I increased his cereal intake to twice a day (full servings) and have introduced him to some baby food.. banana, sweet potato, and prunes. I don't feel like I had a supply issue with my milk and he latched on fine but since starting solids I swear he must have gained 2 lbs. in just a couple weeks. I haven't had him weighed yet so I could be wrong but he is definitely noticeably bigger and for the first time is outgrowing his 0-3 month clothes and size 6 months are fitting. He gets constipated the past week, hence the prunes, and I also water down the cereal the past couple days because he's been waking up crying at night in pain with the constipation. But this is what the doc recommended and as far as weight gain it seems to be working. And his appetite is as big as ever - he just wants more cereal/baby food than I can give him for now because of getting constipated. So I guess he just loves to eat and once he's more used to solids it should be fine. I plan to keep nursing too.

My daughter is 5 months and weighs 11.5 lbs. She also has cereal in her bottle and I've been trying to feed her baby food but she just makes a lot of weird yet very cute faces... so we're working on that one. The doctor says she's healthy and growing so she's just going to be a tiny one for now.

If your doctor is not concerned about her weight, you shouldn't worry. My son is in the less than 10% for his weight and my doctor has said it's not an issue becuase he is growing on "his" chart just as he should be. He is just turned 5 months on 11/17 and he is probably only 14 lbs now. Like I said, if your doctor isn't worried then don't be yourself. Remember that every baby is unique and grows at their own pace. If she is happy and healthy then consider yourself blessed!

My son is 5.5 months old, and weighed in at the ped's office today at 12 lbs 12 oz (with a diaper on). I agree with other posts that if your little one is gaining weight, eating enough, and seems happy, then there is not really anything to be concerned about. My son is in about the 30th percentile for height, but only around the 2nd percentile for weight. However, he is following the "normal growth curve", and my husband and I are both small people. So our ped is not concerned at all. He is healthy and happy and growing strong, so no worries! Hope that helps.

ETA: I should mention that he was also born 5 weeks early, so he's always been somewhat on the small side.

Talk to your dr and if she is meeting all her milestones and following her curve from birth she is fine. My daughter is 5 months and 13 lbs. so I know it can be kinda scary. Just make sure to tell your dr if she isnt meeting some of her milestones especially at a her 6 mo check up cuz then your dr may consider a PT eval

Nothing to worry about. Every baby grows differently. As long as she has doubled her weight and eats well and is healthy she is fine. My daughter is 23 weeks and weighs around 13lbs but she was 5lbs 12.4oz when she was born. If anything changes and becomes worriesome, check with the doctor.

Hi Casey

Babies grow in differ ways. My daughter is 5 mos she weigh about 13lbs and when she was born she was 6lb 11.2oz I breatsfed for about 3 weeks then had switch to formula for medically needs. Your daughter weight is fine. As long as she eating ontime she is ok!

hello, my daughter is 23 weeks and she weighs 11lbs 12 oz!!! but shes 24 inches long...she is also eating baby food and cereal. her dr just says shes a small baby...she was 5lbs 10oz when she was born 1 week early by c section. so dont worry, the cereal and the food will plump her up soon enough! its hard too cuz my daughter wears size 0-3, some still newborn but her legs are long so everything fits her weird! i hate it!!!

I am breastfeeding only she has not gotten any solids at all yet. Breastfed babies gain slower that bottle, so dont worry!. My Rayne is 5mth 1 day and when we went to BF support group friday she weighed 12.12 in the 25%. But her dr told me 5%. The dr is using a growth chart for bottle babies, had me scared to death for a while.

My little girl in now 5 months 2 weeks- she is probably about the same weight- roughly 12 pounds. She was born 7. I have asked my health care nurse about the weight gain and as long as they are increasing each time and not decreasing it is fine. It also depends on wether the baby is breastfed or not. I too feed my daughter cereal and fruit and veggies, but my nurse did mention that breastfed babies are slower gainers than formula fed...

my daughter just turned 5 months on the 8th and is barely 13 pounds. I was told that she was in the 5th percentile, which is perfectly fine since she is very healthy and active. She is breast fed and we still have not started her on any other foods yet. Every baby grows at a different pace. And I think that genes can play a role in that too. Some people are just genetically petite.

That seems fine to me! My daughter is almost 5 months and just hit 13 lbs. She is in the 25th percentile which my doctor said is absolutely fine as long as all their measurements are close percentile wise (length, weight, & head measurement). She'll probably hit that 6 month growth spurt and gain some more weight anyway....don't worry about it!

My daughter was born at 5lbs 9oz (four weeks early) and she is now 13lbs 8.5oz @ 5mos. Her doctor says she's where she needs to be as far as percentile for her age group and she's longer than average. She's perfectly healthy and drinks formula, eats cereal & baby food. A happy, healthy baby is what matters so don't worry. I'm super tiny so it could also be genetics as well.

My daughter was born 5lbs 13 oz (on time) and she is now 13.9 lbs. Last time she was checked she gained a lb. in two weeks! She started out small but has definately hit a growth spurt. She is still on the small side too though, and is very short. Babies grow at their own rate. As long as she is eating and having wet diapers she should be fine. Like another mom said, you could always bring it up to her doc or make an apt with a baby nurse. Good luck and enjoy your peanut! :-)

my daughter is 5mnths old too and she was just weighed at 5kilos which i think is about 10pd. she is growing steadily she was born 4pd 12oz. her brother was born 6pd2oz he weighs over a kilo more than her which is nearly 3 pds more. he is growing steadily too. at their last wiegh they both put on 500grams so as long as they are both growing i am not worried so you shouldnt be either. every one is different. i have a boy that takes after his dad and a girl who is like me. a chunky boy and a petite girl. as long as your daughter is healthy and consistently gaining weight i wouldnt worry

Both my son's did not weigh much at 5 months old. My son just turned 4 months and is 11lbs 4oz. He is at the 5th percential for his age but has been there since birth. He is growing on his own curve, meeting all his milestones and is very active. I also work with a lot of kids and the doctors always say as long as children are growing on their own curve and meeting there milestones then there is nothing to worry about!!!

I have a son who is nearly 5 months and weighs 13 pounds 8 ounes, so that for boys is in the middle of the 3rd and 10th percentile chart for boys but he is very active, alert and happy so im not worried. I think if your baby girl is putting on weight steadily and is happy, active and alert then i wouldnt worry you may just have a petite little girl, but if you feel something isn't right and you are concerned then see a doctor or book in with a child baby nurse for a check up. :)
