Who else is still using a pacifier? When do you use it and doyou plan to wean off the pacifier anytime soon? If so, how? My daughter is really dependent on hers for naps/bedtime. We keep one in her crib so that she can soothe herself with it if she awakes in the middle of the night. Is this okay????

Thanks for all the responses! I guess there are lots of others who still let their little ones use a pacifier, but also a lot of people who have already weaned, plan to wean soon or are nervous about weaning from the pacifier! She really does seem to need it for sleep, so I think I'll let it go for a little while longer or until she has teeth, and then try to wean... In the meantime, I'll try to get her more and more used to soothing with her bunny stuffed animal, that she also loves and sleeps with.

I dont think that's a problem. Our daughter also uses one when going to sleep. During the day , though, all she wants to do is play with it! So that's fine with us. I plan to let her keep using it like this til at least one. She is not dependent on it other than when sleeping.

My oldest daughter never took to a pacifier. My second daughter, just turned 3, still uses one at night and nap. We hadn't planned on giving one to my son, now 8 months, because of the problems we've had with our daughter, Rowan. I don't really like seeing 2-3 yr olds walking around with pacifiers in their mouths lol. But unfortunately he constantly wanted to suckle! We had to break down and give him one. I read a lot about when to stop... they were saying at 6 mths the need to suckle is over. We still haven't weaned him. I just don't know what to do. Especially with our 3 yr old still using one at night. It's really no fun having to get up 3 times a night because it's fallen on the floor though.

My second child never liked them. My first and my third used one and I took it away at 6 months when they got there first tooth because I was afraid it would ruin there teeth. I would take it away from your child asap, the longer you wait, the harder it will be for you and for her. I just took it away from my kids cold turkey and it wasn't even realy a big deal, they were a little crabbier than usual for like the first day or so but it was fine. Good Luck!

I have never given my daughter a pacifier. She seemed to be perfectly happy without one, and I did not want to give her something that I'd have to take away from her at a year old. Plus, I couldn't afford the orthodonic bills that might come if she gets too dependent on one. I thought they might temporarily mask any problems she's having as well or cause ear aches.

My son just plan out quit taking his at like 4 months old if not sooner.Just all of a sudden he did not cry for it and when we try to give it to him he would spit it out. Now he just chews on it and acts as if it's a toy! lol So it was very easy for us.

We only give our son the pacifier at night when he's sleepy, although he doesn't always take or need it. We've been giving it to him a little more during the day recently since he is teething and it helps him to suck or chew on it.

I was so proud of myself when i got my daughter off of the bottle and the pacifier all in one week and then it came time to move her out of our room and now at 3 years old she is taking a passy only at night time not even nap time anymore i think that if you slowly ween them they will one day just forget to ask for it just dont sit it in plain sight or they will always want it. When she gets out of bed in the morning i always make sure i get it and put it away or she will sneak and hide it for later.

My son used a pacifier until he was 6 and a half months old then one day i went to give it to him and he clamped his little mouth shut and hasnt had it since. I was told that weaning at nine months was the best option and try to transfer the dependency of the pacifier to a toy or special blanket by repeatedly putting it into the cot instead of the pacifier. 9 months is when children form attachment to toys etc apparently.

We still use our daughters too. I plan on getting rid of it by the time she is 18 months old. I ws going to try for when she was 1 but we are going on an overseas trip and think she may need it on the plane? Not to sure. But we only use it for naps and bed time, never just for the sake of it if she is up and playing. If we hold out till she is 18 months im going to try and get her to leave it for "santa" when he comes. not sure if it will work but its worth a try :)

I still use one. And it is fine! Our docs recommended getting rid of it at 9months, and we will then cut it down to naps and nights, then just nights and then it will be gone by 1yr. They say 9 months because the need to suck is still very strong until that point. At this point, they get thrown on the floors too much and pick up germs that can cause ear infections.Good luck!
