I started at around 4 months with rice cereal, then soft solids after the Dr visit. Single grain first. Although my baby girl loves the different mixed fruits and veggies, she'll eat the single stuff if she has too.

usually , the best way to tell is how baby is with a spoon ,
A not ready baby , their tongue protudes so baby can't take food from a spoon
A ready baby , mouth opens as soon as spoon approaches
mouth closes as food stays in mouth and is moved to back of throat for swallowing .
The recommended age is usually 4-6 months
Personally , I wouldn't rush it ,once they start feeding, there is a lot more work to do !

The very newest recommendations from the AAP, and WHO are exclusive B. milk or Formula up to 6 months and then Cereal or meat (or something with iron in it, I don't think it matters all that much, it's for taste and texture mainly at first anyway) Not long ago it was still 4-6 months, and many books/docs will still say that. but the reason they updated was cus of the High incidence of diahrea they were seeing in babies of that age, combined with food allergy worries. It's not gonna kill 'em, and many babies could be fine, but I waited till 6 months to be safe, and we are not at all rushing it.
After doing a lot of research I found it's not so much about a stickler about an exact age as about watching for the signs of readiness: Sitting up well supported, holding head well, able to turn head to say no to food, not spitting food out with tongue (a reflex) showing consistent signs of hunger after feedings, opening mouth for spoon and interest of food on plate. The biggest rule I think I read was NO solids before 4 months, because statistically that is where there was huge jump in food allergy risks.

Babies can start eating rice cereal at 4 months. Once they get the hang of the cereal, they can move on to veggies first stage for baby food. Then fruit. It is recommended to try one veggie at a time for 4 or more days to make sure they aren't allergic to that food. Sweet potatoes are a hit, my son loves them. Once they get the veggies down, try the fruit-same thing 4 or more days to make sure they aren't allergic. Beware of the bananas-they made my son constipated and I didn't know what I could do for him. If your child becomes constipated from them and you can tell they are trying to push it out, bring their knees to their chest to help ease it out...I learned that a little too late and had to hear my son scream and cry in pain for about 10 min. So sad.
