Feeding your 4 month old solids. What are your tips and tricks?

I started feeding my 4 month old solids this week. He has had rice cereal in his bottle since he was two months old (due to acid reflux), so I thought I would try to spoon feed it since he seemed ready. He gravitates toward the spoon, but when he actually eats the rice cereal he doesn't seem to like it at all and fusses. I tried adding a little of the organic bananas and to no avail. Is this something that requires patience? Any suggestions?

I started both my daughters at 4 months as they grabbed food off of my pate and tried to eat it!! LOL. Give him just a tiny bit off of the spoon first and let him get used to the texture. Mix the solid it with breast milk or formula as they are used to the tast. Keep up with the little bit for a couple of days and he might open his mouth for bigger spoonfulls. Also rice can be pretty constipating when teething so if it is in his milk for the resasons you mentioned above, try barley and oatmeal for solids as it will help not bung him up. Also sometimes they are just not that hungry. If they turn away or squeeze their mouth shut they are not ready! Hope that helps!

I started giving my baby food at 4 months as well and he didn't like the plain farax try looking for the flavoured one and leave the plain one for his bottle.. And try giving him different food fir lunch and dinner as to what he has for breakfast.. I have to put farax in my babys bottle as well somedays.. Btw they now tell you to not give baby solids till there 6 months but I was tired of having to turn away from him while I ate cos he would stare at me as if to say mum I want some of that... Please mum just a little ... Lol

try giving him oatmeal or barley try each new solid for three days then switch he should be ok to try his first foods now just look for reactions to it. if it is a new taste to him it may be less work trying to get him to eat it. also try his cereal different ways thinner, warm, cold, etc.good luck

Since my son has acid reflux, there is actually a need to put rice cereal in his bottle to thicken the formula. That said, it does sound like consistency is key and patience is as well. I think I will try a bit of food and then his liquid...thanks for the suggestion!

firstly hun please don't keep putting his rice cereal in his bottle!! otherwise he wont get to know the difference between what food is and what milk is. other then that i found that if you give them a small mouth full of rice cereal and then give them the bottle of milk straight away after they seem to think their just getting her milk.

i've done this with my daughter and she takes it fine.....you just have to be quick at putting the food in their mouth and then giving them their milk straight away otherwise they tend to push the food out of their mouth.

oh and i know it sounds like a lot of work just to get then to eat but its all worth-it in the end!!!!
GOOD LUCK
