Why do car seats have expiration dates?
You may have heard that car seats have expiration dates. It's true, they do. There are concrete and important reasons why we must retire our trusty seats after a certain time.

Take some time to look through the galleries on the left. We have provided photos of some popular car seats and where to look for the date of manufacture and expiration dates. These labels also may include model, serial and batch numbers. The companies don't always make this process easy. This is especially true when the date is found molded into the plastic. We did our best to help you find the appropriate information for certain child seats. If you need more guidance finding this information on your particular model, contact your manufacturer or post your question and we'll try and assist you. We will grow our photo library over time to address additional seats.

If you've looked at the photos, you understand that there are indeed manufacturer expiration dates. We found that dates can be as many as 8 years and in some cases as little as 5. Parents should know that NHTSA instructs its techs and both Safe Kids and the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association agree that no seat should be used for more than a period of 6 years from its date of manufacture. What should the public take from this? They should note both experts and seat manufacturers agree that seats do have a finite lifespan. Best practice would be to retire that seat after 6 years. That is of course unless your car seat manufacturer states that its lifespan is 5 years. Always consult your seat markings, labels and manual for this information.

Let's say you're on board so far. Now, you need to know the reasons why they expire.

Technology changes

Car seat technology is always evolving, as are vehicles' ability to secure seats properly and consistently. Before 2002, Lower Anchor & Tethers for Children (LATCH) did not exist. Now it's a common system by which car seats are installed. The same is true of top tethers on car seats and tether anchors in cars. A skilled technician would never think to bypass tether usage if it is an option. This technology exists to make our children safer.

Materials wear out

Plastic stresses and warps. Straps and fabrics fray and rip. Instruction manuals get lost or destroyed. Important instructional labels fade, tear or fall off completely.

Manufacturing landscapes change

Your manufacturer may no longer stock replacement manuals and parts. Maybe the company has gone out of business entirely.

The bottom line is this: Know how to check your car seat's expiration date and vital information. Retire that old car seat and get a new one if necessary. As always, ask for help. Contact a CPS technician for some curb-side instruction.

Not just car seats but cribs as well....It is illegal to sell your od car seat or crib..

How many of yuo ladies adhere to this??

My son is the 5 or 6th child in this crib. I got it from a friend when my oldest was born and she had used it for 2 or 3 of her kids. Guess what it works, we just dont drop the side and check the screws once a month to be sure everything is alright. My kids are close enough in age really nothing has change and they used the same infant carseats.

I thought that it was just illegal to sell cribs that were bought before the change over in June?

My daughter is in a 10 year old crib... yeah it needs to be replaced. But at the time we didn't have the money to buy a new crib.

I know that the local consignment store sells carseats. They are strict about what they accept too.

I got a letter from the insurance company saying that they would provide a free car seat. I looked at the picture and laughed. It was a picture of the really old carseats from the early 90's with the huge bar that went down in front.

This next one will be using my daughter's old infaint carseat. Don't care, it was a gift, but still a freakn' expensive carseat. It is still well before the experation date.

Well, oops all my babies were in a bassinet made in the early 1900s. Didn't check on safety, just looked after my kids. All three of my kids were in that and then now all three have had the crib. It's what we have and I have no money to buy anything else.

Part of me thinks it's safety. Part of me just thinks it's money. My son uses my daughter's car seat. Pink, but hell, I know it's still within its date before expiring and i don't have money for a different one for color's sake. deal, kiddo! lol. But around here there is a lot of sharing and passing back and forth. Clothes, seats, bases for seats, cribs...you name it. Our family shares. But..as long as no money passes, it's all good?

Can I sell a high chair? lol. I mean, kids used to die in some of those old chairs! oh wait. i'm giving them ideas. sigh. i just wish it were simpler life. slower vehicles so even if one did crash, people rarely died. slower paced society. back in the days where you could legally nurse your baby while driving the five country miles down the road to grandma's. or how much of a blast did i have in the back of dad's truck!? SO not legal now.

I knew about the car seats but not the cribs. My first tow used the same crib, it was actually never taken down, so I don't see what would be the harm in that. I would use a crib again, so long as it was not very old, a yr or so, and so long as it met standards. Also, if you have been involved in a car accident you need to get a new car seat. Auto insurance actually covers the cost, as I found out when my daughter was in an accident with her children.

I knew that about the car seats and have never had a hand me down seat... I think my ex has had my son in an old one, but w/ as rare as he sees the kids.... I just hope nothing happens cuz my ex is NOT concerned about safety at all... At least not from anything I've witnessed in our life together and the things I hear about NOW. I've done just about everything I can do about that w/ no results though.

Didn't know that about the cribs. We bought second hand cribs for the girls.... not an issue NOW, of course, ;)
