The families of an 11-year-old boy and the 15-year-old girl he made pregnant were last night struggling to come to terms with the fact that the youngsters were having a baby.

Theresa Stewart and her son, Sean, 11, now Britain's youngest known father, have gone into hiding while the mother-to-be, Emma Webster, 15, braved the media with her parents.

Emma, who lives next door to Sean in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, said she only found out how young he was when she told his mother she was expecting his baby. She was, she said, angry with Sean for giving her the impression that he was the same age as her. The fact that he attends Margaret Beaufort Middle School in Riseley had apparently not made her suspicious.

"It was not until I said I was pregnant to his mum and his mum turned around and said 'how can an 11-year-old be the father?' that I knew," she said. "I was shocked and I wanted to know why he had lied to me about his age."

But once Emma had overcome the initial shock, she adjusted to the idea of being pregnant and adopted the attitude that: "It was my mistake, nothing can change it now." She has chosen names for the baby, who will be her parents' first grandchild: Rebecca Jade if it is a girl and Ben Louis if it is a boy.

She is still seeing Sean, whom she has dated since November, and hopes he will give as much support as he can. Her parents have agreed to look after the baby, which is due in January, when she returns to Sharnbrook Upper School.

A spokeswoman for the Family Planning Association described the pregnancy as "an isolated case". She added: "I have never heard of an 11-year-old boy making a girl pregnant before." Records reveal the ages of young mothers, but not of fathers. In 1995, for example, there was one live birth to an 11-year-old and two to 12-year-olds. In most cases of a young girl becoming pregnant the father is either the same age or older.

It was only when Emma went to the doctor because she felt unwell that she discovered she was pregnant. "I thought I might have had a bug or something," she said. "The doctor said the symptoms I had made him think I was pregnant and the tests were positive."

Her mother, Shirley, 46, and father, Ray, 49, were devastated when they heard that she had been impregnated by an 11-year-old. First, they had thought the "mature-looking" Sean was 14 and, secondly, they had no idea that the pair were having sex. "We didn't realise they were sleeping together until Emma dropped that little bombshell about the baby," said Mr Webster.

Six weeks on, they have adjusted to the news and are impressed by the way the youngsters have handled the situation. "I think they have done everything that could be asked of them," said Mrs Webster, who has, with her husband, discussed the baby with Sean's family.

Sean's mother, Theresa, is said to be unhappy with the situation. She reportedly said, before disappearing to an unknown address: "He [Sean] is only a child. He doesn't really understand what is going on. This has put him under tremendous pressure. She [Emma] is much more mature and experienced than him, and I worry as any mother would."

Emma, who turns 16 in November, decided to keep the baby after much soul-searching and counselling. Her parents have agreed to take financial responsibility for the baby's upbringing, and are not expecting any contributions from Sean or his family. They do not, however, intend to hide the situation from the child, who would be told that Sean, who turns 12 in December, was the father.

Bedfordshire County Council said social workers were monitoring the situation. "We have been in contact with both sets of families ... and we are offering our support," said a spokesman.

Okay, recently we just had the debate about a 10 year old becoming pregnant. age of consent, rape and all of that. Now the father of this story is an 11 year old boy and the mother is 15 years old. (mind boggling honestly)

So an 11 year old boy can get a girl pregnant. Does it matter if he is under the age of consent and the mother is over? Would this also be rape? Or do we have a double standard when it comes to girls and boys because girls carry the child?

I agree, the parents hold the majority of the blame in this, considering how young the kids are. I just don't believe it to be plain black & white in all cases, there are areas of grey.

Aniesha, how would you even be able to prove whether the guy didn't know the age or not. 99% of the time, it would end up being his word vs her word.
All the people that I have slept with, I knew their age and they knew mine. That was part of basic introduction. And not just *oh, I'm X old* but full birthday. It also helps that I KNEW those people.
I will NEVER understand the one night stand, pick them up in a bar and take them home type of scenarios. Just screams BAD IDEA to me.And this is one of many reasons why.
In the case of the original story, it was just a stupid thing on the part of everyone involved. The girl should have asked/known the boys birthday (what gf DOESN'T know their bf's b-day??) and her mother should also have known! And what about HIS mother. Why did she not know who her son was hanging around (even if she had no idea they were dating/sleeping together) She should have known who her child was hanging around and should have questioned what a 15yr old would see in an 11yr old to want to spend so much time together.
That honestly would have been my first question. Let's face it, even in an innocent situation, it just seems strange when a 15, almost 16 yr old wants to spend a lot of time with a preteen.
As stupid as the decision may have been for the children, I blame the parents for not keeping a closer eye on their children. KNOW who your child is hanging around. Be involved in your childs life.

This is kinda off topic as we are dealing with the victim of the statuatory rape being a boy and not the other way around; But i was so blessed that my son learned a lesson around the age of 13.

We had a friend of the family who was 22 years old. He went to a local bar and picked up this girl. Now, in Indiana, you have to be 21 to even be in the bar. If a restaurant has a bar, kids have to be seated where they can't see it. So, obviously he thought, hey, she's 21, she's drinking alcohol. He took her home, they had sex, a week later he was arrested. She turned out to be the 16 year old daughter of a judge from Howard county. He went to prison prison for 6 years for that and is now on the sex offenders list.
Jr didn't understand it, so we had the age of consent conversation and that it is important to see someone's ID.. make a game out of it if you have to, compare your photos, see who has the worst photo, but no ID, no hanky panky. And also the importance of getting to know someone before having sex with them, but i also realize thats not a realistic expectation. checking an ID is.

Even if he knew the age, it is a law. Statutory rape is so minors who are "not old enough to legally consent" don't have sex with people who can make that choice with supposed sound mind.

No I don't believe it should go on his record, because based on the information that he was given, he hasn't actually done anything wrong. I think it would be a terrible thing to be marked as a sexual offender for the rest of your life, and put in the same category as people who forcibly rape, or pedophiles. If he knows, then by all means he should be punished. I know though that I'd hate it if my brother/son, etc got framed for something that they had no idea they were doing wrong. The girl may be young, but she should still be able to be held accountable for lying in the first place, she obviously knows what she can be letting the guy in for.

Well, think of it this way Aneisha....a 17 year old boy, with a very developed mature 13 year old girl...dating and having consensual sex. He never asks her age. Finds out later when the parents go after him. Prime example of statutory rape. You don't think that should go on his record? He most likely would not go to jail, but he would be place on the sexual offenders list.

I just think it gets quite hazy on what is fair & what isn't. Even though by law it may be considered rape, I would feel extremely sorry for someone who was jailed on a count of rape if they had no idea that the person they slept with wasn't of legal age.

and why do ppl seem to keep that up? the yay good for a guy getting action, but damn the girl forever if she does...BUT this situation...the girl seems like a selfish and quite stupid girl. i just feel so bad for the boy

You are right Amy, and at 11 do they even understand what they are encouraging with those ever approving high 5's?

And that's crap. His little 11 yr old buddies are probably high fiving him without realizing what could have emotionally and physically happened to this boy. BOY. Not young man.

Going to start another thread quicksies.

Well, that is kind of the whole point Amy...like if it was in reverse and the boy was 15....he would be charged....so is the girl getting charged? It is never taken the same when the girl is older than the boy....unless it is like a women teacher with a student.

Sometimes there are double standards. In this case I think it would at least be statutory rape.

won't the girl be put on some kind of sexual predator/offender list? i mean....11!! and not bright enough to realize a general age if he's in MIDDLE School.

did they do paternity testing to find out for certain if it was his? i was so clueless about sex at 11.i wonder if there is more to the story. i think if the girl is older and....probably was coerced if not outright rape - the boy shouldnt be held responsible for upbringing financially.

i do agree though that rape or not is a pretty big factor.

Oh, and just for clarification, it was not in question if the 11 year old BOY raped the 15 year old GIRL....it was whether or not the GIRL raped the YOUNG BOY.

Did you just Shush me? Nope I don't know you. And if you do not want me to respond to any of your posts...hahahaha.....that is not how it works. You cannot delegate who responds to what you say, but you can help posting period. You do not need to be so rude, and if it was your 11 year old child that got molested, raped, seduced, statutory raped, incest...and resulted in pregnancy of one of the parties, I am pretty sure you would care.....or I hope you would.

You should care Katherine. It is unfortunate how many children have to grow up to fast due to sexual misconduct...in every sense.

I find the entire situation to be very sad for everyone- more so the unborn baby. I dont care about was it rape or not.

I think it would still be considered statutory rape. Here it would be even if the other person did lie about his or her age.

Wasn't the rape of that young girl when she was 9? and wasn't it by an older man? In this situation, cannot say it would be a double standard. It is a sticky one. he lied about his age, and she is not the age for consent either. I think it is 16 years old for consent.

This is a perfect example of why we need to talk to our children at a young age about sex.

That's wonderful. I pray for the best for them all. Now some counseling is definately needed, especially for an 11 year-old father.

To expect suppport from him is a bit much. I think she should concentrate on what's best for the baby. It needs adult parents that can support and raise it. Adoption is a very valid option here. Unless her parents are going to step up as parents for the baby.

i can't imagine what she could see in an 11 year old, but she didn't know how old he was. I don't blame her anymore than i do a man who meets an older looking girl and she lies about her age. i think there is a double standard, but not in this case, Now the fact that she is still seeing him is a problem...

Aniesha - posted on 11/25/2011

What a sticky situation! I would say it's rape if she actually knew how old he was, but if she didn't know, then is it really rape? A lot of my friends used to sneak into the clubs underage, and one of them had quite a reputation for going off with guys, but I didn't blame those guys for sleeping with an underage girl, coz they were assuming that coz she was actually in the club that she was of age.

I feel sorry for the baby that's on the way, but the parents of the girl sound awesome & so supportive.

It is absolutely rape.
In Canada, from the last time I read about these things, the age of consent is 14 and until 16, they can only consent to someone who is 2 yrs in either direction (a 15yr old can have sex with a 17yr old, but not an 18 yr old, a 15yr old can have sex with a 13yr old, etc). 16+ can consent to anyone (I believe)
This is statutory rape. She is obviously more mature than he is, no matter how mature he may seem.
It is 14 years from when this happened. The mother would now be almost 30 and the father would be in his mid 20's. I'm curious where they are now. . .
