MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin couple who were worried that their infant daughter would become obese starved her for months, causing the girl to gain just 5 pounds in the 14 months after her birth, prosecutors allege.

Christopher and Mary Sultze, of Appleton, were each charged this month with a felony count of child neglect, and each faces up to a year in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted.

Christopher Sultze, 35, appeared in Outagamie County Circuit Court on Thursday and was released from jail on bond on the condition that, among other things, he'd have no contact with the child. His preliminary hearing was rescheduled for next week.

Mary Sultze, 36, waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday in exchange for her release on bond so that she could tend to her other three children, said her attorney, Brandt Swardenski. She, too, was ordered to have no contact with the daughter she's accused of starving.

Neither has entered a plea.

"I have serious reservations about whether there's any criminal activity here or just misguided parenting intentions," Swardenski said. "This is a case where we need to reserve judgment until we learn more details on exactly what occurred."

Christopher Sultze's attorney, Michael Petersen, declined to comment.

According to the criminal complaint, the couple's daughter weighed slightly more than 8 pounds when she was born in July 2010 and weighed just 13 pounds this past September. A doctor told police the girl would have to weigh 22 pounds to even appear on the growth charts for her age. Another physician noted that the child had no subcutaneous fat on her body and was essentially starving.

Doctors began tracking the girl's lack of growth and weight gain at her four-month checkup in November 2010, when she weighed just 7 pounds, 9 ounces.

Her parents began to grow irritated that doctors were continually concerned about her weight, the complaint said. They insisted they were feeding her enough, and said their other children grew slowly and that they believed the girl would eventually gain weight.

Months went by with no significant improvement and tests for potential medical problems came back negative. In August, the family's doctor convinced the Sultzes to admit the girl to Children's Hospital of Fox Valley for an evaluation, investigators said.

The girl gained 8 ounces over a day at the hospital, but a social worker assigned to the family as part of the admittance process noted that the girl's parents were upset by recommendations that they needed to feed her more calories and said they wanted to take their daughter home, against the advice of her doctors.

According to the complaint, Christopher Sultze told a doctor he didn't want to have obese children and he kept insisting the girl would "get fat" at the hospital.

He later told police and another social worker that his family follows a very low cholesterol diet. He said he underwent bypass surgery for a blocked artery when he was 25 years old.

Court records show that Mary Sultze was charged in 2009 with misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct for biting her four-year-old daughter on the arm. According to the criminal complaint in that case, she told police she bit her daughter to teach her a lesson after the girl bit her older sister. Mary Sultze acknowledged that "it probably wasn't right to do."

She ultimately pleaded no contest to the disorderly conduct charge, which is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes. Prosecutors dismissed the battery count.

Appleton, a city of about 70,000, is 125 miles northeast of Madison.

Thoughts? WTH? And what about the 3 other kids? how healthy were they? Does this say something about our society about trying to be thin instead of healthy?

I see where where your coming from and where your going with that Tah, but I just can't bring myself to go nawww *pats parents who are starving their child to death on the head* you poor uneducated souls. Here have your painfully thin and malnutritioned child back and take a couple of parenting claesses.

Sure by all means, take parenting and nutrition classes, from your jail cell.

I tend to agree with you Kellie and thats why i said they need a pysch consult because it seems their perception is off and it can stem from other things. Maybe his close call with his heart has led him to be overly zealous in his attempts to make sure his children aren't obese or unhealthy. This is a world that puts a lot of emphasis on looks an weight and then we are shocked when we see people who think like this.

They knew their child needed more food, more calories, more colesterol at the Hospital, But they didn't want obese children.

I think it's way to easy and a total cop out to cry ignorance and a lack of education. Their doctors expressed concern from the time the child was 4 months old, they hospitalised the child where she gained much needed weight and the parents were told she needed more. This is way more than uneducation.

Are you fucking serious?! What would be needed for this dude to admit that this is more than 'misguided parenting'? a dead child?

What is wrong with people?!

I think they are plan undereducated about what the needs of a child are and they may need pysch consults. As a matter of fact, they need court ordered pysch consults. They are allowed around the other kids because why they aren't being starved, however they are doing it, by witholding the right foods or food at all they can look at this child and realize that she is in need, unless their perception is off which it seems like it is. It's more along the lines of the thinking of someone with an eating disorder, they are skinny as can be, but they only see themselves as overweight, except the view isn't of themselves but of their children which they can control. I think it's very sad.

I have to admit, from their picture they don't look like the sharpest sporks in the drawer. But they have 3 other kids and the mom doesn't look like she's eating healthy.

I guess case would be like the ones where they take obese kids away from parents... kinda the same principal, uneducated parents

to feed them yes but how much and what no. you'd be surprised the questions I have to asnwer from a close friend and from new parents on a regular basis. not every adult is aware that babies need the fat and cholesterol that can be so bad for an adult. Starvation doesn't necessarily mean not feeding a child at all. It can mean limiting the amount of food they get and the kind of food they get. some parents are of the mentality that if it's not good for me it's not good for my baby which for the most part is a good mentality EXCEPT when it comes to food. and I remember a mother on here asking a loooooong time ago if it was right to feed her baby the same diet that she was on which was low in cholesterol and lowered caloric intake. Luckily she was asking people who answered tactfully, informationally, and quickly! but you'd be surprised how many doctors and nurses forget that we don't have the same knowledge that thtey do and don't explain things adequately or ask the right questions. the doctor may have just been asking if she is eating enough, and how often. in which case it's absolutely feasible that they could have answered yes she's eating lots and left it at that. There's also a chance that they were not told that the kind of diet they were following wouldn't be good for their baby. And if you're not told and don't do the research, how are you going to know? the fact that this child is alive is evidence that they were feeding her and not starving her for long periods of time, they probably were feeding her on a regular basis, just small amounts and not the right foods....Kind of the opposite of parents feeding their kids junk whenever they want it.

Has it occurred to either of you that they are simply undereducated and didn't know this? Now i understnad that their doctor was concerned about her weight gain, but her dad underwent heart surgery at 25 because of a blocked artery. As dumb as it sounds, they may have had her best interests in mind they just went aboutit the wrong way. you'd be surprised that some parents don't know that babies can't eat the same way we do as adults. They don't understand that babies need cholesterol and fat. They don't know how breastfeeding works, and wind up supplementing. they just don't know!

It's the sentencing that sickens me most. This girl has a chance of having MANY problems later on in life. Babies NEED fat to grow, and that includes their BRAIN. I can only imagine the food disorders that the other 3 children have or will have.
Some people (I REFUSE to call them parents) make me sick. Health is above and BEYOND more important than the stupid numbers on a scale!!
