11yr old son Not coping in Maths

My son is 11 and he is not coping in Maths at all ,his cousin is in the same grade and same age and get the same Maths teacher do excellent
He is good in all other subjects and is very academic which his cousin is NOT
He seldom gets compared to his cousin as we all stay in the same house
He cried the other night when he got 12/25 for his Maths test as he says that it is very hard
How do i help my son manage his maths problem as he is also attending extra classes but they also dont seem to be helping
im desperate now

thank you so much Vicky ,that makes perfect sense ,i will put your plan into action on Sunday evening ,just the two of us in a quite place and try and see what i can do to make the sum more easier"looking" ,thank you once again

Hi Cherith,
I understand where your coming from My son has had some problems with math as well.
What I found worked for me was lots of encouragement that he can do this. Is it possible that you go somewhere quiet with him where there are no distactions and work with him on a nightly basis?
Sometimes when kids are compared to others that are doing better, according to the adults anyway the kids take on a thinking that says the hell with it im the one who isnt good at this so why bother! Maybe talk to your son about what it is about math he doesnt understand. Sometimes the wording can through a kid off. I remember when my son stuggled badly with dividing his teacher would go over it and over it he couldnt get it. Another teacher tried same thing he couldnt get it. When i sat with him it became clear to me that he didnt get the words the teachers were using. Example: How many times does 6 go into 36? Thats where he was stuggling. So i told him instead of looking at the division sign put a x there so it would be 6x what number would give you 36? He didnt understand that dividing is times tables. After that he got it, he then loved dividing constantly aked his teacher for more. Is it possible to get him a tutor? Sometimes the school can recomend one
