OK - I know that a girl can start as early as 9 years old but what is the latest????

My daughter is 12 almost 13 in March and she still has not started her period. I asked at my yearly about this and the nurse told me that she should start after she starts to develope pubic hair. She has that already and I guess I'm just worried that something is wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

So glad to hear because I have the same worries that Denise has, these doctors sometimes brush things off, unless it has to do with a erectile disfunction they don't ease your worries!!!!

Nothing is wrong. I developed with all the puberty signs one goes through between 10 - 12 and only started my period at 15 and a half. Be patient it takes longer in some girls

My daughter showed menses at age 9 and then it stopped. Now that she's 12 no sign of period to be found. I worry because I got POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) at age 35 and I've been on menopause ever since, so the idea of my daughter getting this worries me A LOT!!!

I don't totally agree that they start shortly after they get pubic hair. I was a week away from being 10 and I started but had no pubic hair at all. My granddaughter is 9, she is developing breast but for the last 4 or 5 months she has cried about everything, she is grumpy and has an attitude. I know its all due to hormone changes. I just was wondering how long this will last.

Actually, girls can get their periods even younger than 9, but I believe the average age is 11 or 12. Turning 13 without having a period yet is not at all unusual. Some girls don't get it until they are 15 or 16. Unless there is some other reason for concern, it should be fine.

My daughter was nine when she had her first period....it was rough on her, but I was always open with her and so it wasn't a big shock.

I have a 12 and 13 year old and neither has started their periods. As long as signs of puberty are showing, developing, hair etc, then everything is fine. On my oldest daughters physical when she turns 14 the doctor offered to do hormone testing just to make sure but, she assured us everything is fine.

When growing up, a friend of my mom's daughter hadn't started by age 23. My first one I had at 13 (basically just some spotting) and the second one more than 7 months later.

I was 16 when my period started. One of my daughters started at 11, the other is 14 and still hasn't begun. It all depends on the girl, so don't worry. :)

Oh, BTW..my daughter is not very active, weighs 120 lbs and started getting her boobs and hair at about 10...so....I honestly don't think there is any truth to the wieght thing, hair thing or activity level. Mother nature shows her face when she wants :) If your one of the lucky ones she's late :)

My daughter is 13 she will be 14 in August and she hasn't started hers yet. I asked my doctor and she said that it can happen as late as 17 and not to worry, as long as they are showing "signs" of puberty it will come. She also said that there are actually health benifits to them starting later, not only do they not have to deal with it yet but, they are actually less likely to develop certain cancers :) it's nice for us too we don't have to deal with teenage PMS yet or worrying about teen pregnancy. So , don't stress it will come and enjoy your little girl while she still is a little girl :)

Hi--I didn't start 'till I was 14. My daughter's 10 and very athletic so I'm not worried yet (and she's only 59 lbs, too). She has a friend who is almost as athletic (both do gymnastics), just a few months older and she's just started. But her mum didn't start 'till she was 16; the kid's grandmother started at 10 or 11, though. It's all what the others are saying: everyone's different and she will start when her body's ready. Relax. Having a child with PMS is horrible, according to my friend.

My daughter will be 12 this year and hasn't started either. She's active but doesn't play sports for school or anything like that. I was VERY active ..playing softball..and I started at the age of 10. I weighed about 90-ish lbs. I will be worried if she don't start at the age of 14 or so..then I'll ask a doctor..but I'm sure your daughter is fine.

I guess it varies.. how active the child is and how tall/short and how the family history was is those area.

My daughter had just turned 11 when she started hers I think I was almost 13. I have read before that it usually happens around a year after the pubic hair and breasts granted that is not always the case but better to be safe than sorry and prepare your daughter for the transition. :-)

that nurse talks rubbish!  Pubic hair has nothing to do with it.  She will start when her body is ready and the later the better as far as I am concerned.  Try not to worry, let nature take its course.  Helen

My Daughter is also 13 this yr , she has had pubic hair for about 3 yrs , thought she would start her period early because of this , I started mine at the age of 10. My daughter has the monthy cramps and the hormonal attitude lol so I guess it wont be long. She is about 100lbs.

Well you know what they say about a girl developing late I think there's nothing to worry about but by the time she reach the age of 13 and still not seeing it go to a doctor and do a physical on her.

i've also heard of some girls not starting till they are 15 & 16. take this to heart, if what the doctors say is right, the later a girl starts the less chance of her developing any kind of female cancers later in life. there's always a light a the end of the tunnel.

The latest could be 16 years of age. Its a matter of maturity, growing of chest & such. Each person is  different. If you started late, its possible the trait of starting late could happen to her. As we know, the cramps start a week before the cycle does.

Hi. I agree with the other's who said it will happen when her body is ready. I got mine at 10 1/2. My daughter started "developing" over a year ago, and just got her period last Wednesday...ON her 12th birthday!

I would ask your daughter's pediatrition. Ours told us there are 5 stages (sorry, I forget what they are) and did a physical and told us when to expect it. As well as she could. My daughter started at 12 yr, 4 months, but my younger sister (now 42!) didn't start her's until she was 15! I definitely think 13 is nothing to be worried about.

I was 14 when I had mine for the first time. I know my mom was a bit worried due to me questioning it since everyone else I was friends with had already had it but she was told due to have active I was that sometimes it just happens later. My mom was 14 as well when she started. Is your daughter very active?

12, almost 13 is nothing to worry about. My mom, who is now 81, was 14 when she got it. I was 13 and a half. My co-worker was almost 16! We all grew up normally and all have 2 kids now ourselves! My daughter is almost 10 and beginning to develope breast buds and pubic hair and is absolutely mortified! She is in no hurrry and actually tries to hide her chest under layers of clothes. There is a wide range of normal and if your doc says don't worry than I wouldn't. It's still plenty early.

Denise, I didn't start my period until I was 14 years old. It will come when her body is ready. Besides,be glad that it isn't here yet. You know everything that goes with it, don't you? Plus the cost, so please don't be in such a hurry. If by 15 she doesn't get it then take her to the doctor's and talk to him/her about the situation. I hope I helped a little.
