Wonderful to hear from mothers of 'older' children. One of the posts mentioned that we never stop being mothers - absolutely! My experience is that we have to be 'present' in different ways than when they were younger. I guess a question is, how do you think about the changes in relationships with young adult children?

Quoting Tami:

have a 13 year old girl and 14 year old boy. would love more conversation dealing with young teen issues.

I have always found that kids actually like boundaries, It gives them an easy out if they aren't ready or are morally uncomfortable with something.  Just lay it at Mom and Dad's feet,  My Mom will now, they check everything, I'll be grounded, whatever take it out of their hands till they can the confidence to say no on their on.   Clubs like Drug-Free America  are great, because they never know if they will be randomly tested.   I often told my children in their young teen years you don't have to like me , but you will respect me.  AT 19 and 20 we have finally achieved both.

I have two daughters, 22 and 26. I thought life was over when the youngest went away to college, I thought they wouldnt need me anymore, how untrue!  The oldest is now married with two little girls of her own, 23 months and 4 months. I love the relationship we have now even more than before. We laugh at jokes, talk about movies we have seen and share books we read we thought the other would like.  Hard to explain but the relationship is different and I am loving this new "us". She is the first one I call about good news or when I want her opinion.  I love the women she is becoming and the mother she is to her kids. This is a whole new season and I am loving every min of it, you will too.

Hi Judith,

I couldn't agree with you more. I have a 26 year old son who has two daughters ages 6yrs and the other is eight months. I feel more like a mother to him now thatn when he was living with us. It is the greatest relationship because we now both can learn from one another. You never stop being a parent, and you never stop learning. I wish I was as good a parent as I am a grandparent. lol

Quoting Nancy: Yes, I have a 20 yr.old son, a soon to be 16 yr.old daughter and 10 yr. old daughter. My son gave us very little trouble, my 15 yr.old daughter has been so far the most difficult; she's been very good at lying and manipulating situations/occurences.  Can't give up on her, we still have to forge ahead and be consistent more than ever...

I love the changes in the relationship. They are learning to take more responsibilty in the communication process and It's not always us seeking them out. They are wanting to call and see how we are doing. It's Great. Now when they first move off and get married it hurts like the dickens b/c they just want the freedom. But now... they carry part of the conversation

I have an (almost) 14 year old girl. Amazingly, she has the maturity of someone in their early 20's. I am quite fortunate!!

My kids are adults but you never stop being a Mom and they still have issues they share with their parents. It would be informative to talk to Grandma types.
