My 6th grader (11 year old) got called a hoe at school today. She asked what it was. I told her that it was someone who had no respect for themself. Some people thought that was a good response and some think I should really tell her the other definition. My husband said I need to have a sit down birds a bees talk with her. I fee like she is too young. Any thoughts

I agree with your husband too. In our house the birds and bees talk was done by 12 yrs old. So she really isn't too young for it.

I agree with your husband. Kids know so much more these days. I would have the birds & bees talk with her before she hears it from her peers.

I have talked with her about periods and body changes. We even had to go shopping for bras. My mom and husband think that I need to talk with her more about things. I think it would be OK to wait but don't know how long. This is hard because nobody ever talked to me.

Your definition of the word "hoe" is fine as far as it goes as it is really an insult and not a serious label for her proclivities. Odds are, they kids who called her that don't know really what it means, either. So many rappers use it these days that some kids just think it means woman..

But you do need to start something. By this I don't mean to have "the talk," but instead to start a recurring conversation on sex, boys, dating, the female body, and so on. Most girls start their periods anywhere from age 11 to age 13, so it is past time to discuss such things with her.

I agree with your husband about the birds and bees talk but I wouldn't elaborate on what a ho is as she will learn soon enough what it means. But by age 11 they are already starting to get interested in boys and better for her to learn from you her parents then the kids around her about all that stuff.
