How do I get my 10 year old to do chores. I have tried awards on weekends, an allowance and grounding when she doesnt. I also have a 6 year old that I would like to do chores. I want to get them both started and give them allowance for it but they dont seem to care if they have money or not! What do I do? Any advice or suggestions?

We made a chore list for each day, and he comes home from school does his chores and homework before anything else, no friends, games, tv, until it is done. We also give a weekly allowance that we pay at the end of each month, but if he 'forgets' a chore we take away .10 cents for each one. Has worked for us.

My sister in law put me on to paying for jobs. She wrote down all the tasks she wanted the kids to do, and then as a group they allocated an amount for doing each job. It didn't matter WHO did the work. If you did a high priced task, you got more money. My niece and nephew used to fight over the jobs! Good luck.

Chores around our house don't come easy either. We have 3 girls and a live in grandma. If you stay on them and don't argue back with them it does work.. just put your foot down and stick to it. We also have weekend clean up where we clean house together. We have the chores for the week posted on the fridge. Each has one main job and then others that alternate between them. We give them an allowance not every week. We are going to start giving play money for the chores they do, in exchange they can cash it in for real money or an award. It worked for my nephews when they were younger maybe it will work for mine. We also make them save a part of their allowance to put in the bank for when they get older. All kidding aside It also helps having a BIG sometimes mean looking father saying NOW! Good Luck

My son just turned 12 and still has problems doing his chores. I agree with what Lynda said, find what 'speaks' to them, it was something that helped me in the end.
Also my son has his own bathroom, and I stopped picking up his dirty clothes that he would just drop on the floor two feet from the hamper. It embarrassed him when his friends came over and saw his bathroom. It only took about a week before he kept his bathroom clean.

I have the same problem. I have tried everything. nothing works for my kids. sorry I'm not help but let me know if you have any other Ideas.

Figure out what it is that "speaks" to them. Is it TV, video games, time outside, a cell phone? What ever it is that is their "money" use that as the reward. Lay out the chores that you expect done before they can do.... or have..... and then dont argue about it. They wont like it and you will tempted to argue and explain yourself, but resist the temptation and give it time.
