Facebook and Kids?

facebook is for 14 and over my daughter has aked for a account but i said no. If they have emails address they can talk ove MSN one to one so u know who they are talking to at all times you can also read any thing thats sent in emails.

In the TOS it says that you have to be 13, with the consent of a parent. Personally, I am not comfortable with my kids (almost 13 and almost 10) having accounts on Myspace, Facebook, Gaia, etc. However, with Gaia, my daughter has an account. I know what my kids do on the computer, I am very aware of their activities. I agree with Cindy when she said "As long as we are responsible parents and continue to check and ensure their safety and teach them how to use the program properly" then it is alright. If we are open with our kids (as in 'open-door' 'come-to-me-with-anything') they will not fell the need to sneak or do things that are inappropriate. I think I have rambled on a bit here.

Cindy - Is there a minimum age to sign up for Facebook? I wasn't sure about Facebook, but I think on myspace you have to be 14, so I was just wondering about that if you had to change his information.

My son is 12 and he just got his own gig on facebook. I check it every few days to make sure he only has the friends I know and am okay with. I think as long as you know their password and can access their account then it should be okay. As long as we are responsible parents and continue to check and ensure their safety and teach them how to use the program properly then it should not be an issue. Think about it and maybe you will decide there is a way to please both of you.

is it 13 or 16? im not sure, my eldest is cumin up to 13 and im really weiry about it to
be honest, people you dont know can get in touch with you too easily pretend there kids and turn out there actually adults when then it could be too late! speaking from experience my 10 yr old wanted a msn i watch her closely on it!! someone added my daughter pretending to be a girl calling my daughter sexy!! wantin to know info about her etc, then my daughter said through the conversation you cant be a girl and the other person said no im a man!!! i deleted reported and blocked this person!!! u never know who these peop are, please be carefull!! i dont think there are any legal measures nothing they can do really, its very wrong of her mum doin that!!

I'm a very cautious parent and I personally would not let my kids have a facebook, myspace or any other page at that age. My eldest son is 13 and he still does not have one nor will he until I see some more maturity from him that he could handle it. honestly I think they are more of a girl thing, my sons aren't that social. You should always use caution when putting a child's information online. I don't know about legal issues with using a false name, since she's just trying to protect the child.
