She excels in school and participates in sports???? How can this be considered lazy?
What does she lie about? If she is being defiant at home and especially with you, I would venture to say she is experiencing herself trying to have some sense of control in her life.
She may not know this, but it's what happens as early as 4 yrs old. They are desperate to control something.
She may be like my boys. They only do well when in a structured environment. I know it may suck at times, but in my experience it really does prove itself. Charts and To Do Lists work well, too. Mentor ship programs are also great. She sounds like a great candidate for it.

Have you tried finding them a mentor?? Someone not to much older, but someone that is modivated and can help lead them? Good luck :)
