I have a 13 year old son that always wants to be by himself all the time! I have 5 kids and all of them are in sports besides the baby... So I am always busy, but I will ask him if he wants to go he says no! So I guess its just being a teenager? Anyone else have a 13 year old?

My 12 1/2 year old is starting to do the same thing, and I've found he is very insecure about himself and how he fits in. He has plenty of friends at school and is a good student, and is involved in sports, but his nature is to be slightly shy and that is coming out strong now. I can't say we have been great at pulling him out of it yet, we have found we have to force him into activities and to be social, otherwise he resists doing it completey, but we promise that if he doesn't enjoy it we won't do it again, and so far it has worked out ok. Good luck to you, I have 2 girsl coming behind him, I'm afraid this is just the beginning!

Yes and no. Yes, he's starting to push for independence being a teenager, but no, make him realize he's still a part of the family. Don't push him, he may rebel. But make him an offer he can't refuse. There's a time for family, and there's a time for friends, school, etc. Nobody knows your 13 yo better than you, so find out what's causing him to retreat to himself or his room. Try making him open up to you, to find out. I found out at that age that my son had a girlfriend, but until I had a talk with him personally, I wouldn't have known. Be the level-headed one. If you're the hysterical type, have your significant other do it. My son thought he can approach me a lot better than his dad, so he came to me. Either way, it'll give you peace of mind knowing what you know.
