My 10 1/2 yr old has been out of control moody for the last month. I have noticed her hair getting oily and BO. No boobs or pubic hair. Today, she was complaining about heavy discharge. When I looked at her underwear, it was a lite pinkish, I hope that she is not starting her period!?!?!

I'm 10 yrs and I have had my period. During her period, she will have many cramps and she will get moodier. I get really emotional on my period. She will also start bleeding. I started bleeding dry blood, and then it got redder as it came faster. All of these symptoms are normal, but I recommend getting pads for the bleeding, in case she bleeds non-stop like me. Hope I helped :)

American Girl has a great body book that was very helpful in explaining all the body changes that happen! I would highly recommend it made the explanation easier!

Speaking only as a mother, I had a daughter who did the same thing. Actually, 14 is about the average age if the girls are normal weight. This daughter did have irregular periods throughout her teen years. Get the supplies you will need to teach her about her bodily changes and prepare yourself to explain these things. We made a big deal about becoming a woman and celebrated with a special dinner. When her period finally started and she began experiencing the symptoms regularly, we started using a great chart that helped her chart the symptoms she experienced, so she could see the weeks they showed up just before starting her period. She learned those weeks were also the time she usually got grounded! There is a good website http://healthappy.com/pms.html that explains more and gives access to the download.

So a few months ago, my daughter, nikki, found a blood spot on her underwear. She is thirteen and I figured that it would be about time for her to start her period, but it hasn't happened again since, is this unusual? And is it unusual that shes already about fourteen and hasn't started her period yet?

I struggled as a young girl with having periods every two weeks for many years. I also had dramatic mood swings which was later acknowledged by the medical world as PMS. As I researched this over the years I found that 3 out of 5 women struggle with symptoms of PMS/PMDD and even more important, that girls can show symptoms up to three years prior to starting a period! No wonder we struggle with our children. They are struggling with becoming a young woman in little girls' bodies and just don't know what's going on. I found a great book called, From Combat Zone to Love at Home: The Happy Face Token System that addresses these issues and much more. There are charts to learn about symptoms and behavior charts that work amazingly well in helping the child take responsibility for actions. Has anyone else used this book for good ideas? It offers quite a range of solutions and step by step concepts that helped me with my 10 year old daughter's mood swings. I knew I was making headway, when she put her arms around my neck and thanked me for being the best mom and that she was feeling much happier. Peace prevailed again.

My Daughter is 11yrs old and she has always been my more calm and quite child compared to my other 2. But lately she has started to get an attitude and really sensitive. She has stayed home from school 2 times already in the past week and a half because she has really a really bad stomach ache and she says it hurts in the lower part of her abdomen to the point where she cries. I Started my period when I was 11yrs old and at school, But My mom or nobody explained to me what it was so when I got mine I freaked. So my question is, How do I talk to my daughter about getting her period without scaring her? also all the changes with her moods, body changes, etc....Can it be that she is about to start getting her periods? I know I sound like I don't know nothing but I just want to know how to approach the situation the right way because growing up my mom never had these conversations with me. I just don't want to scare her.

My daughter never had any signs when she started her period. My daughter was 10 when she started hers and she just went to the bathroom at school and when she wiped there was like a spot of blood and she texted me about it and I told her to stick toilet paper in her underwear. And then when she came home that day she started crying because there was blood on the back of her pants and everything \:

Hello I was wanting to know what the signs were. I have a 10 year daughter her stomach is been hurting down low ever since Friday and she has been very moody. Everything you say to her she cries. Which she's had breast for awhile. She has pretty good size for her age. which I don't know if if she is having any discharge. It has been awhile for me is she fixing to start her period or is it other trouble and I need to take her to the Dr.

I think it does. My daughter turned 10 last month and she started yesterday. Shes been complaining about tummy aches for months, but then again i sort of ignored it because she belly aches a lot. But she has had buds for over a year now, shes always been moody so i cant tell basing on that. Im soooooooooo not ready to deal with this.

I agree with Jen. Any discharge that comes with pain is better checked out by the doctor and especially if it smells or you have itching. Regardless a visit to the doctor is your best bet and then you can ask her about your period.

Trina and Alli - Unfortunately no one can say exactly when you will get your period. Some people say that it comes when you get to a certain weight, but often that's not true at all. Some girls get their periods right around the time they start developing breast buds, and for some the period doesn't come until after their breasts are fully developed. You just have to be patient. I would say that if you have a lot of discharge, and stomach pain, you might want to get that checked out. That could be a sign of an infection that should be treated, instead of a sign that you will be getting your period.

My Daughter is 10 1/2 and told me she saw some hair down there- none under her arms though she started stinking about 6 months ago and I noticed she is getting little bumps. Man is she moodier than ever. I am thinking I need to get that American Girl book too. This was all taboo in both my Husband and my family so I don't want the same thing to happen. She is very tiny though. She weighs 55 pounds and 4'6. I am hoping she will start when I did at age 14. Does size have anything to do with menses? My Mom was a bigger child and so was my Sister and they started early and I was very tiny and started late.

Could be...you could always just have her carry a sanitary napkin around with her in a purse just in case or you could bring her to her pediatrician and have her talk to him/her.

My daughter started at 11. Yep there are signs but of course every child is different. Mine got lazy, then moody, then complained of some tummy aches and lower back aches. This came and went for a few months...I finally understood what was happening and we had a talk. I told her what to look for and sure enough within about two months we got spotting...a month later...a period. Inform her of what you believe is happening and prepare her. Girls start their period it seems younger and younger. But when the body is ready, the body is ready. Puberty is one train that has no brakes.

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on this website. My daughter is 8 years old, she will be 9 in October. This morning she told me that she is seeing a little blood when she wipes and has for a few days. She has also be complaining of tummy aches. I had a talk with her....I was very unprepared since she is my oldest child. So my question is, when girls start their period is it really light. She hasn't had any spotting in her underwear, so I'm wondering if it could possibly be something else. She is tall and skinny for her age, it seems crazy that she could be starting this early. I started in 6th grade...so not too early. I'm wondering if I should be worried about anything else that it might be. Maybe I'm just a little bit in denial, she is just so young. Any advice would be great!

I usually have her eat very light and provide a cold compress on her head but lately that hasn't helped. Does anyone know of any natural remedies to use for PRE- start of menstrual cycle?

Hi Tracie, just to add to the comments below. most girls will start around the 11/12 age mark but it can vary from 9 to 14 or 15. Every girl is different. Sometimes I think that girls are hearing comments from their friends and say things to see if there is a reaction from the moms, especially if she is hasn't had "The Chat" yet. There are so many signs of purberty it's hard to say if one in particular will indicate her pending period. I think once she has been informed about the changes happening to her and she has everything that she needs should her periods happen away from home then you have nothing to worry about. Nature will take its course.

Hi Tracie,

As you can gather from all the comments below while there are similarities across all girls, no two girls are the same. They all develop differently. There are physical symptoms such as pubic hair and underarm hair and the development of the breasts. There's also greasy hair, sweating with BO and I think growth spurt(at least that's what happened with my two daughters). There is also the emotional ones like mood changes, the attitude, tiredness, just overall grumpy. You wonder where has my lovely daughter gone and who is this person in my kitchen!!!!!! where has she come from?? They say that puberty is like being a baby again, she cries, throws tantrums and sleeps all day!!!!!! I know I'm giving 'tweens and teens a bad wrap here I don't mean to. We've all been through it ourselves so just think back to what happened with you.

Yes I believe those are signs..my 11 year old daughter were having similar symptons and she started her period last week...(it was very light) I don't believe it has to do with when you start because I was 13...I believe it has to do with how her puberty stage is coming along.

Mt 11 year old twins, have both pubic and underarm hair, vaginal discharge, boobs and acne. What I read, was that 2 years after their boobs started growing then, their periods would start. Yesterday they did complain about lower abdominal pain, they have pads in their school bag and at home. They are small for their age, where I was tall and skinny and one of the first to start my periods in school. Bless, it really isn't a fun time. I just hope they don't start this weekend as it's their birthday, and this wouldn't be a nice gift!

I just have to talk to her and tell her the truth about everything. I rather tell her then have someone in the streets tell her and they liie to her..My advice is all girls are different they are deveopling faster now and maturng faster.. We as mothers just need to talk to our girls and be honest..

There is a great app for that! You can track her moody times and when she feels crampy then when it starts you can keep up with flow and length. My daughter started at age 12 but it seemed longer than a year prior that she had PMS and belly pains along with some acne issues about that time of the month. It didn't come together for me until after she started that all the clues were there. I think one of the droid apps is Pink Pad and I am sure there are more. I have one for me and one for my daughter on my phone and now she logs her own info in on my phone and it even sends me an alert when Aunt Flo is coming. Nice! We get along better now that her period has arrived so I am thrilled over that.

My daughters are 10 & 11 and have had body odor lately. My 11 yr old has hair "down there" she wont let me see her armpits, i just happend to see down there on accident. So, I know it's coming but she's so mad all the time and doesnt want to talk about it. My mom didnt talk to me about it until it happened and I dont want that to happen with her. I'm trying every day. I might get an American Girl book like someone suggested, to help her understand, since it wasn't explained to me very well. This forum is helpful, I don't have anyone to talk to about this!

yes those are all real signs of becoming a young woman. but noone can say exactly how long she will have the symptoms before she actually starts. my daughter is 11 1/2 and has been having mood swings forever and cramps she already has all the hair and boobies but still hasn't started yet. But boy do i wish she would already so maybe then her mood will level back out a little. all you can really do is keep something for her cramps and some pantyliners ready and make sure she knows what is going to happen and hope for the best.

My daughter is 10 yo and she's already wearing a bra and has pubic hair and has body odor. Im so not prepared for this tho, she's always been underweight ( she is not quite 70lbs right now, after having a huge growth spurt ) and I joke that if she turns sideways she'll disappear. She's very active in ballet and looking forward to doing sports this next year as well. Her doctor prepared us that she will probably be later then normal because she is so small.. but that really doesn't seem to be the case. She's also lately been complaining of stomach cramps, so I think it wont be too much longer. We're pretty open about what having your period is like and what to expect, but Im beginning to think I should maybe have some pads on hand ( I have an IUD and haven't had a period in almost 4 yrs. )

My daughter is very moody, she has started cramping, and is starting to develop breast buds. She will be 13 next month. I was a very late bloomer, I was a few months shy of being 16yrs old before I got my monthly. I came from a very large family, I have 5 sisters that started their cycle around the same age as me. As it turns out,my mother was also a late bloomer. I explained this to my daughter and stated that she may blossom late as well, and to never feel bad about it. It was a blessing for me to start late.

my daughters started at the age of 10! scary! yes they had the moods no pubes though n no bust, and they got cramps it was about 2 weeks after the first initial cramps luckily i had taken them to the doctor because i thought it was food poisoning, i dint start my periods till i was developed and 14 so it was confusing. the doctor said that i should get some pads that were light and stick on as they shouldnt use tampons for the first two years as they are still developing down there.
