My 12 year old son is only interested in TV & play station. No other activities. How can I keep him occupied with more interesting things his age. He is not to keen on sports.

If your son doesnt like anything but ty and playstation take that away from him and only let him use it for 30 min.to 1 hour per day.he will get bored and start looking for something else to do.TV and PS do get kids addicted. In my childhood we didnt have such things as PS,Nintendo,Computers etc...we always been in girl/boy scout, went swimming, met friends and so on and we never been bored.

Scouts is a great way to engage without sports. Lots of activies and wholesome interaction with piers who aren't all about sports. We actually have set an earn video game/tv time account up so he has to earn it with grades, good deeds and chores. Pets are also another good way to teach responsibility and get them out of the house for a while.

I have the same issue with my son that is 16. While attending counseling with my younger son who is 12, I spoke to the counselor about the older son being addicted to his playstation. The counselor said that the game systems can become very addicting for children like tobacco for an adult. There is actually a rehab for children with this addiction. She suggested that we get him interested in something else. For example Sports which he doesn't care for or gardening. We set up a small greenhouse and started growing tomatoes and other plants. My son finally found something to do other than palying the playstation and the younger son loves helping with it too. This also gives us time together as a family. You just have to find what they are intersted in and help them figure it out.

Do you go to church? Church youth groups have lots of fun things for kids to do these days. Ours does paintball, game nights, roller skating, service projects at homeless shelters (painting, serving food, boxing up donated athletic shoes to send to homeless shelters.) What about a reading group, a science club or a chess club? Riding bikes, stamp or coin collecting, photography and/or scrapbooking,or maybe an individual sport like swimming, diving, skateboarding or golf, instead of a team sport. How about music lessons? Does he show a natural talent for singing? Or playing an instrument? Gardening or cooking can be great hobbies for children, too. The key is to find something they already show some talent in and are interested in learning or getting better at.
