Puzzled: How to discipline an 11 old boy who, as retaliation from an argument, writes an obscene word on the other boys' garage door?

I just found out my 11 old boy did this. He got into an arument with another boy from the street who pulled his shirt ( He ruined my best shirt -was my son's defence when I comfronted him today) and as retaliation he goes and write an obscene word on the boy's parents garage door. I sent him to the boy's parents to say sorry and that he will pay for the paint from his own money, but I am still puzzled by his reasoning, he still doesn' t beleive what he did was so bad. My husband says that I am making a way too big deal out of it. Am I?

No you are not making a big deal about it because if it had happened to my house I would have had him arrested. So he is lucky the family is willing to work with you guys so that didn't happen.

Thank you Vicki! This is what we did with him and hopefully he learned a lesson. Getting a new shirt versus having to pay and work to fix his "action" - if he handled this differently, was a great argument.

I dont think your making a bid deal out of it at all! He should have to pay for it and he should be the one removing it as well! If he were caught by the police he would be charged for mischief! So ya it is a big deal.

Maybe sit down with your son and have a chat about his options that he could have taken instead of graffitying someones property. Maybe talk about how his actions have affected more people then just himself?

Point out that if he had handled this differently then perhaps the other boy would be paying for a new shirt?
