I was just wondering if there is any rants or do some people like the show bubble wrap kids. I watched it and I think some of the mothers can be too extreme of over protecting their kids. I know you want your child(ren) to be safe, but keeping them from having a childhood is a little selfish. What do you think?

We just got rid of cable TV and only have apple TV and internet streaming. I watched one episode on YouTube. I wish that kids were like they were in the 70's We had freedom to ride our bikes around our neighborhood. We were smart but also really never thought that anyone or anything could hurt us. Was it better? were we naive? maybe so, but it seemed that things that happen today to kids didn't happen back then or at least I never heard about anything! I am sure that they did but maybe they weren't as transparent. They were not as focused on, and now this 'focus' has created an environment of fear, an expectation almost of violence and danger. My kds (boys) are encouraged to ride around the neighborhood (armed with do's and don'ts), but alas, they prefer just to ride over to one or two friends' homes and play indoors. I swear, kids' today don't get enough sunlight! Well maybe they do when they are at school and at P.E., but at home you have to force them to get out of the house. If they arent' doing video games, then they do Wii or read book (a good thing), or listen to music. Neither of my two younger (12 and 14) are on social networking. the 14 year old says it's not worth it, and it creates bullying and jealousy and gossip and he just likes to see and talk to his friends on the phone or at school. I'm not even the one that pushed that agenda! The younger one likes comedy and watches comedians on youtube and reads books. He has great friends at school that call him "the comedian' I am worried however that they do not really venture out in our neighborhood that much (not due to fear), but due to the lure of what's indoors! And...we've taken alot of it away! I take them to play tennis and to the park and to museums and once on the high speed rail to downtown about 30 miles! they were afraid of 'weird people' and homeless people and getting 'ripped off!' lol. Sounds like they need more of that 'going out on a limb' thing. I am the opposite of a bubble wrap parent, but my kids kinda put themselves in bubble wrap probably because of what they see their friends' parents doing. Most of my 12 year old's friends have 'Tiger mothers' and so those kids are kept on a short leash. Hope this wasn't too long. Sorry.
