My daughter is about to turn 12 years old (25 in her world), she has been having cramps lately and nothing seems to take them away; heating pad, meds, etc. She has all the other goods....pubic hair, armpit hair, body odor, and moodiness, but no period! I got my period when I was 9 years old, am I jumping the gun here or should I be worried?

I started when i was nine no signs, but when i turned 15 i had the worst painful cramps, breast were tender and headaches, i used to miss the first 2 days of school every month, well i only have 1 daughter and 3 boys, thank god!!!! I go thru alot with her just as my mother did with me,she also started at 9, no symptoms until she turned 15, she misses school twice a month, the pain is to much to bear, and i always make sure one of her brothers is home with her cuz she faints from the pain. Asked her pediatrician why she never had these symptoms when she started and why when she turned 15 like myself, she said she hadnt hit puberty and her harmones had not kicked in (i guess the age when they are beginning to become sexually active) and it makes sense. My coworkers daughter is 13 and started her period a couple of wks ago, about 6 months ago she had all the symptoms but no period, her daughter called her from school to give her the good news, she asked her if she wanted her to pick her up she said no she had everything under control, she carried a purse in her back pack ready with all the necessities she was going to need, i think my co-worker was more nervous than her daughter, but she was well prepared and guided with instructions on what to do, just talk to your daughter and prepare her for it. All will be fine. Good Luck!!

I guess it just depends how long this has been going on. I didn't get my period until I was 13. I guess if the cramps have gone on for months, I would taker her to the doctor for advice. Good luck.

Hi Angela,

I wouldn't be worried in the slightest. It's all coming sooner or later. Just be sure that you have a chat with her. At her age make it simple, put a little pack together for her put S.T's, wipes, pants and disposable bag in a little case. Don't make a big deal of it but take her for a walk or when everyone else is out of the house sit her down and go through it with her and explain it all to her. Maybe ask her what she knows already she may know more than you think. As you go though the conversation with her let her ask questions and answer as honestly as possible. I had the conversation with my daughter when she was 10 as I knew they were just around the corner, yet when she had them at 11 she nearly had a heart attack and the screams coming from the loo where something else. So obviously not everything went in (and I thought I had done a great job!!!!!!!!) obviously not. After the chat have a nice cup of tea and relax.

Our oldest daughter got hers when she was 11. There is no reason to feel that you are jumping the gun. It is always good to be prepared. Honestly, I have a feeling that by the sounds of it, her "friend" is on its way. Now to play the waiting game. Have you talked with her about it at all? Does she know what to accept? Good Luck, this is never an easy conversation or situation...I still have two girls to go in our house...it scares my husband, so he is NO help! LOL

I wouldn't worry. Make sure she eats healthily and keeps active, it'll improve the moodiness and the cramps if it is hormonal. You can always check a paediatrician if you have doubts. Got mine at 11. Ask your mum in law what time she got it or sisters in law if you can, it may be they get it later in that family, I think you are one of the unlucky ones that got it quite early in life. Good luck, x.

My daughter had on and off cramping for a yr. She got horrible cramps just after she turned 13 to the point it was ubearable to walk...couple hrs later she got her first period. Now its still the same as her period is not regular yet since she is in her first yr of her period. She still gets cramps and now bloating but its the same time every month.

first have her checked out however my daughters doc told us the year before she "got the bloody show" of the period you can have all the symptoms of the period except the bleeding. my daughter did the same thing when she was 10 at 11 she started the blood. we also found she has irritable bowel symdrome with feels like bad cramps some times. good luck dont worry stay calm and so will she. i found stress made my daughters pain worse. take care

I would not be worried, just make sure she knows what's coming. She also needs to have some pads with her and knows how to use them. We don't want to muck up the first period experience with an embarrassing stain!

It looks like she has all the signs. it should be approaching soon so make sure she is prepared when she goes to school. My daughter will be 14 in a couple of weeks and she has been cramping but nothing else. I was 16 when I got mine. All of her friends have it and she feels like the ugly duckling. All in good time.
