My daughter (22 months) has a severe milk allergy. I have been looking for a great alternative to macaroni and cheese that is dairy-free. Any help-ful hints, recipes, etc. would be greatly appreciated. She can have soy products, I just don't know of a good recipe to try for her. Thank you!

My daughter also has a severe milk and dairy allergies. Tofutti cheddar slices or even their american works with elbow mac. I make the pasta and melt the slices through the hot pasta. Then I stir in a bit of Tofutti better than cream cheese. Salt to taste Smart Balance Light buttery spread also can add a great flavor to it. I never measured just tossed in by sight and I had my daughter taste as I was making it. This is completely dairy free.

here in canada you can get the lactaid milk also lactaid pills or drops . google lactose intolerance and you'll find a yogurt they can have . my daughter is lactose intolerant but also glucose intolerant . if they eat this yogurt before eating dairy products it helps them digest the dairy product better . i wish i could remember the yogurt but not sure . i think it was the one made with live bacteria . some dairy products are tolerated better because they are cooked and the sugar is broken down some what . hope this helps a little. my daughter was diagnosed by me at age 4 . when i questioned dr about it , he laughed at me at first and said it's an old folks disease because most people in their 40's become intolerant .

Hi, I found a soy cheese that is absolutely VEGAN.  It is called "Follow your heart".  I, as well as my allergic 16month son, like the Mozzerella kind.  The Cheddar only tastes good when it is cooked in something.  but we tend to stick with the Mozz.  Good Luck

My son is 17 mths and he has had issues for a very long time and they finally came to the conclusion that he is allergic to mac and chz.  He loves it and his 3  yr old sis loves it too and can no longer have it because I think its mean to taunt him like that.  I dont really know what to do.  If it was just  the milk you could go soy.  But I havent found any chz made from soy yet.  I have switched to spaghetti with red sauce and they equally love that and it seems to make them forget.

I tried the VEGAN cheddar block and the recipe suggested....it worked great! She gobbled it up. I also bought the Mozarella block and made her pizza as well. Since she goes to daycare and sees all her friends eating pizza and mac and cheese...I was wanting her to have a dairy free version so she didn't feel left out. Thanks for the great advice!!!

Hello

Both my kids have severe milk allergies I get Soya Cheese at the grocery store like superstore LOBLAWS', It is in a purple wrap, The Name is VEGAN,  it is made by Galaxy Nutritional foods:

you can get orange or white, it is Casein& Lactose Free, 100% non-dairy, and even gluten free, it is a good sbustitute , and mu kids like this so much, they can now eat Pizza, Poutine, Lasagna ect.... The company also does chees slice to do grilled cheese, or whatever, it is about 5.00$ for 1/2 pound, the only inconvenience is that it does not melt as much as the real thing, but who cares...Hope you guys can find it, it makes meal more easy...

yes - the soy cheese is very difficult to find without casein which is a milk protein. I'd have to look in a health food store to remember the brand I

bought.

Hi - my daughter was allergic to milk until age 8 (its so great that she has outgrown it :). I used to make her mac & cheese using cheddar soy cheese (in a block - I'd have to think a bit to remember the brand - but it was sold in Mrs. Greens or Whole Foods). I would put soy milk and soy butter in a pot (about 1/3 cup milk and about 2 tablespoons butter but i never measured exactly). Add 2-3 ounces of soy cheese (sliced thin from the block) and stir until the cheese is thoroughly melted. Add salt. Then add cooked macaroni (cook it in a separate pot and drain it) into the pot of melted cheese, stir and its ready to be served. My daughter is still allergic to peanuts so I still make things she can enjoy so she does not miss out on anything.

I agree with one of the previous posts that I found it a lot easier to make accomodations and not look for substitutes.  You can easily mess up and miss something on the ingredient labels if you aren't careful.  My daughter loves buttered noodles and ramen chicken flavored noodles.  And you can do meat ravioli from the freezer section that will have no dairy in it.  All of the canned stuff like spaghetti O's and ravioli in the can, has milk by-products in it.  Since your daughter's allergy is severe, I would rather see you be safe, than sorry.  Just read labels and avoid the issue.  Be careful with soy products also because I found some of the products that say they are soy, still contain the milk proteins that our kids are allergic to.  As your daughter grows older it will be especially important for her to understand that there are things she can't eat... my daughter knows by sight what foods she cannot have, and even stresses out at times if she thinks I have given her the wrong milk!

My son drinks rice milk as it is naturally sweeter without having loads of sugar added, unlike most soya milk, so I make cheese sauce the usual way but with rice milk and dairy free margerine and goats cheese, since it is only cow that he is allergic to, but I wouldn't risk that if your daughter is severly allergic and would use soya cheese instead. He loves it but then he doesn't know any different, bless him!

My 12 year old has a lactose intolerance (though when he was a baby he couldn't tolerate any dairy). I personally found it was best to not try and find a substitute. For example, if I was making lasagna for supper, I would make one for us with cheese, and one for him with only noodles and meat sauce. Mac and cheese, I cook the noodles, keep part of the cooked noodles out for him, and he adds his own topping (usually mayo), and then I make the rest with the cheese sauce. For mashed potatoes, I use chicken soup broth instead of milk and butter.

As someone already mentioned, I haven't been able to find a "soy" cheese without milk products in it.

If you wanted recipe ideas, let me know, I would be happy to share!

You can make a homemade mac and cheese with the old fashioned white sauce (use rice milk or soy milk instead of cow's milk and Earth Balance spread for the butter).  And substitude a vegan "cheese" and melt it into the white sauce.  I used Tofutti slices.  My daughter can handle a little bit of dairy, she has more of an intolerance than a true allergy so I can use the soy cheese that have casein in them but I was amazed to find how few soy cheese are truly dairy free.  There is also a boxed Mac and Chreese by Road's End (I think that's the name?) but I thought it tasted awful and my daughter like the homemade one better.

Good Luck!

We've had luck with a cheese sauce packet (vegan of course) at our health food store. It's quite good. I think it's made with nutritional yeast and onions and other.

I'm all for getting the pre-made stuff.

Do you have a health food store in your area?

We also do a beef stroganoff (with milk alternative), and pesto made with olive oil base (no cheese added).

I hope you can find something that works!

My son decided though he didn't like the texture of noodles though...OIY!!
