Hey ladies!!! I am a mom to an almost 7 month old with a dairy and fish allergy and am BFing. Thanksgiving was hard this year with the diet I am on...but we survived. My dad wanted to put butter in everything and I kept having to tell him he couldn't but gave him some non-dairy butter to use. He just didn't understand...then I really had to explain that dairy will make his lovely grand-baby bleed on the inside, vomit and diarrhea...then he got it a little more. Oh and I made a pumpkin pie...I made my own evaporated soy milk to use in it...it was Yummy!!! :-P

How did everyone else make out?

I agree about people needing to realize milk allergy and lactose intolerance are not the same! Those specialty cakes ect don't do me any good. They all contain rice or potato or soy--all of which my daughter is allergic to...she is also allergic to egg, wheat, oat, nuts and dairy...

you know what i hate when you tell them they are allergic to milk and they don't understand what allergic means they think they are lactose intolerant... two totally different things. Not sure if you are aware but they sell all kinds of cake mixes, brownie, cookies, pancakes what ever you can think of at speciality stores like whole foods. that are dairy free nut free wheat free. they make fresh vegan cakes from scratch. and it is really good....

Oh, I'm sure they mean well. Most people do, but it doesn't make it less annoying. Formula? Seriously? But he has allergies! Formula could kill him! Maybe you should get them a book. Is there a "Food Allergies for Dummies?"

I honestly think they just don't get it. I'm sure they didn't do it on purpose. But it was very annoying because they kept trying to get me to eat stuff I couldn't have. They are not pro-breastfeeding at all. They would rather I quit nursing & put him on formula.

That's horrible! It amazes me how people think! Sometimes I feel like flicking them on the forehead and saying "Helloooooo! I want my kid alive, OK?" I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but at least now you are more prepared for your next trip to the in-laws (or anywhere else for that matter)!

My mom was great & made special food just for me. My in-laws still don't get it. They made one turkey fried in peanut oil. My 4 month old has a peanut & milk allergy. They did bake one turkey the regular way because there were some that didn't like fried turkey & I couldn't eat it. We went to my parents' house first & then drove the 1.5 hours to my in-laws. By the time we got there they had put away the food. Well they pulled all the turkey off the bone & put it all in one container & then wondered why I didn't eat it. They told me that I could tell the difference between the two because the fried turkey was darker. They just don't get it. I can't eat the regular turkey because it's in the same container as the fried turkey. *sigh* We stayed overnight there. Let's just say I was starving by the time I got home. They had no food I could eat. I meant to take a cooler with stuff I could have but I forgot. They live in the middle of nowhere.

Since my daughter has a million allergies--ok not really but it feels that way! I made baked apples. I cut up apples into a pie dish and mixed them with pure maple syrup, cinnamon, and cranberries (I used the dry ones because the syrup plumped them back up). It wasn't the same as pie but it was really good and my kids went back for seconds!

I am also breastfeeding a baby with multiple food allergies...milk, peanut, egg and wheat. For Thanksgiving we ate a lot of turkey and veggies minus the butter and sauces. My mom was kind and made her pumpkin pie with soy milk and it was really good.
