Milk free diet

We just learned that our 5 year old is allergic to milk products. This is very difficult for him at times and he misses some of his favorite foods...macaroni and cheese, pasta with alfredo sauce, and cheese tortollini. If anyone has any recipies or ideas I would love the help. We also have a 2 year old and it is difficult because I find myself making 2 dinners each night.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

He can still have mac and cheese...My son is lactose intolerant and I use a cheese called Veggie Max and he likes it but he doesn't know anything else. Hope this helps

The Kid-Friendly Food Allergy Cookbook is good as well. I just picked it up last week...but I like it.

My daughter is severely allergic to milk. Like your son, she LOVES mac and cheese. I found soy cheese blocks at the health food store. I shred the cheese, add the some soy milk and dairy free butter. Mix until melted. I also shred soy mozarella cheese and make her pizza as well. We have a big deep freezer which stores her frozen foods that I made in a batch, soy pancakes (bisquick), soy biscuits (bisquick), soy muffins (Jiffy Muffin Mix), and her soy cheese pizza. Tyson brand chicken nuggets and Ore-Ida Brands usually are great with dairy free. I use pillsbury brand for her ready-made pizza crust. I also use Pillsbury for cookies...ready the label...most are safe. Hope this helps you get started. You're doing a good job so far and will have it down pat before you know it!

I'm not in your same boat, Allison, but I do know what it's like to cut out dairy. If you have a picky 2 year old, try make-a-head meals. Make a large batch of whatever he likes eating and then serve it to him a couple times a week or make your own "TV dinners" for him.

First of all, welcome to the club that no one really wants to be a part of. I have a 7 year old son who, at diagnosis, was found to be allergic to; peanut, tree nut, egg, soy, dairy and wheat. He has since outgrown his allergies to; wheat, dairy and soy. There is definitely a learning curve in the beginning stages after a food allergy diagnosis. Please be assured, this will get easier. One thing you can do is google "dairy free or milk free recipes." I have 2 great cookbooks I will suggest, "What's to Eat? the Milk-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook" and "What Else is to Eat? The Dairy, Egg, and Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook". Both are written by, Linda Marienhoff Coss. I like her second book best as it has recipes that are easier to make with fewer ingredients. Once I got the hang of feeding my food allergy child, I started preparing just one meal for dinner that was safe for everyone. We occasionally stray from this but for the most part we stick to it.
