When I gave birth to my first baby, the shoulder got stuck for a minute. The doctor did something (pulled/pushed) and then baby came flying out. My whole delivery was rather quick besides this hiccup - I only pushed 4 times. My new doctor at a different hospital is worried about how my sons shoulder got stuck and because my son was a big baby (22 inches long, almost 9lbs) he thinks a C-section would be safer for the next delivery. I'm not sure what to do. I never wanted a C-section.

And well, I hope you understand how unhelpful some doctors can be. Today mine rambled about fat/water soluable vitamins like I knew what he meant. He talks over my head, I hate it. It also makes me less inclined to trust him as he doesn't speak to me and inform me enough. I'm just left hanging and everything is like 'eh - whatever' with him.

So I'm wondering how the 2nd delivery went for anyone. If it is easier? If I should C-section? Should I try for natural? I'm at a loss here, not sure what to think at this point. Any advice/information is appreciated. Thanks

Second deliveries go easier. The first time, your pelvis is not "prepared" for a child. Yes, your son got stuck, but he got out. And there were no injuries. I would straight up refuse a c-section unless it was a medical emergency.
All my deliveries got easier, but my kids got smaller. My first was 8lbs 10oz, 22in; Second was 7lbs 11oz, 21.75inches; third was 5lbs 3.2oz, 19inches (5wks premature) and fourth was 6lbs 2.4oz, 19inches (4wks premature.)

i personally wouldn't opt for a c-section. i would only do that if the situation at hand called for one, or i had a breech child. surgery is serious and should be treated as such.

i agree with constance that you should get a different doctor, and get their opinion as well. i switched doctors in the middle of my pregnancy cause my first one made me feel like a whiner, and didnt' seem to care about things i said. no biggie, much better with the second doctor.

as for whether or not second labors are different, in my experience it was MUCH easier, half the time, and half the recovery time. the baby came out much easier as well.

every baby is different, no delivery is the same. There is no way to predict how any delivery will be.

I had to vaginal and 3 csections all went fairly smoothly I think you should try what you feel best about talk to BF and decide that way.

Good Luck

I was almost 2 weeks over due with my first baby, because I didn't want to be induced. Had to have it done anyway, and the induction took omg...... almost 24 hours. I damn near slept through it all though and they woke me up to have me push. It was crazy - too many drugs. I think I pushed for 5 minutes.. Don't know if that means anything lol

I loved the thought of a c-section. I don't like extended periods of pain such as labor. That scared me more than a c-section. Plus it was a faster delivery. I didn't mind the healing time after either. But I am use to a lot of pain. Just not labor pains. So I know. You need to talk to someone who has had both. I have only had c-sections. Good luck. :)

My son was 8lbs. 7oz. 21 in. long. 23 1/2 hours of labor. Induced 7 days early. I pushed for 1/2 hour, and ripped a lot.

My daughter was 8lbs. 13oz. 21 in. long. 12 hours of labor. Induced 12 days early. I pushed for 15 minutes. Her clavicle broke on the way out. I barely ripped.

I found it easier for the second one, but I know that's not always the case. Second babies tend to be bigger than the first, so a c-section might not be a bad idea. If I have a third child, I might opt for a c-section... I might HAVE to if they think the child is going to be bigger than Lynn was.

My aunt had c-sections and she said that she likes that she didn't have to go the vaginal way.

I would say that you probally will be ok with a vaginal birth again. If it only took 4 pushes to get the baby out you open wide enough. Your muscles are strong but relaxed to allow the baby to decend quickly.

Some suggestions I have to help to prevent it from happening again. Hold on to a chair or anything that can support your weight safely. Hold onto the highest point. Squat completely down. Make sure your legs are spread very wide. Do that several times a day for as long as you can stay in that postion. It will help open your pelvic bone. Get a large exercse ball and sit on that as well. Use it while you eat or at the computer. Allow yourself softly bounce on it this will help as well. Do these things during labor as much as you can as well.

If by chance the babies shoulders get stuck and the Dr. is having a difficult time getting them unstuck then then best thing to do at that time is to flip over and on all fours. Spread your legs and lean back a little towards the doctor. This position will open your pelvis even more which will allow the doctor to manuver the shoulders out.

The doctor you have does worry me. You don't seem like you are comfortable with him. To me it seems like h would prefer to scheduale a c-section so he doesn't get his golf game interrupted. It is your body, baby, and delivery not his. He should beallowing you to make this decision. Not him making it for you. Are too far along to find a new OB? You should always be comfortable with your OB. He should be willing to comprmise on your delivery. My husband's uncle handle cases like this hundred's of times. He would allow a natural delivery because he only woulddo a c-section as a last resort. He would do the delivery in the OR just in case there were problems. If problems aroouse that were out of his control then he would have everything in place t get the baby out. He would move very quickly and mom was put to sleep and baby was out safe and sound withing 2 minutes. He had a prvate practice for 25 yrs. and never once had a malpractice ever. My husband just told me as well that he was so against doing c-sections that he even delivered quints naturally. His proudest delivery of his career. That is insane to me but he did it.

Find a different doctor if you can. That not only will speak to you so you understand them and will listen to you. Your opinion is the most important.
