Do you and your family eat dinner at the dinner table or elsewhere?

We always eat at the dinner table, and I do make sure that whenever my daughter is eating, she is sitting at the table. I want to treat food and mealtimes with respect-- to stop and taste, and to be thankful for our food. Of course, it's also a really important family time, sitting together and talking. I grew up literally spending hours around the table with my family each day, and I want to share that type of interaction with my husband and daughter, as well as the guests we invite over to eat with us.

Kelly that is great that J is so into taekwondo! Our son recently asked to take swim lessons (he's never had them before) and he also asked about karate. Our local Community Center offers both and just had a new pool put in that is super cool so we're doing both this summer. We plan to wait until next year for baseball, there is no way I could juggle all three at once along with working full time. Kazyn is 3.5 and seems ready to get involved in some things which is exciting! :) It's bitter sweet watching our little man grow up...

We eat our dinner at the table all together. On the weekends we also eat our lunch at the table all together.

Thank you--I'm really proud of him! He started Taekwondo when he was 4 years old--I did it to get him some socialization and structure b/c we missed the cut off for kindy, but it has turned out to be one of the best decisions we've ever made for him. I hope your son loves Karate as much as J loves Taekwondo. It has helped so much with his confidence, his consideration for others, and his focus and concentration. Not to mention how it keeps him in shape--my little guy is ripped!!

Baseball is fun too, but I would either play "Fall Ball" after swim season is over, or wait until next spring so that you aren't trying to do Karate, swim, and baseball all at once. J loves swim too, but we're skipping it this year because of everything else going on....How old is your little one?

ETA: I'm sorry, I totally changed the subject of this thread on accident...

Life can get busy even without all the classes and such. I better prepare myself! Our son has talked about wanting to play baseball as well. However in the meantime I'm sure karate and swim will keep us quite busy! Congrats to your son on working towards his black belt that's awesome!

I never expected our life to be so busy, but things just all added up really quickly. His taekwondo is in high gear because he is earning his Black Belt this summer, so there are more classes than usual, and he made Demo Team, so there are extra practices for that--If I'd known how demanding the Black Belt program was, I'd never have let him do Demo Team along with it. He LOVES baseball, so there's no getting out of that.

It's really not so bad eating separately, and it helps me stick to my diet, but I put A LOT of value on those evening walks, and on our weekend time together. J doesn't seem to mind either because he's a picky, picky eater, and this way he is eating foods he likes more often which means he is eating more, that's because I have to make him something separate anyway, so i might as well make something he likes.

Kelly I think my life will mimic yours soon as our son will start swim lessons and karate classes soon and I’m already wondering how dinner is going to fit into the mix.

I usually eat at the table with the kids, Mike doesn't eat breakfast and isn't at home at tea time because he doesn't finish work til 9pm. On his days off, we have a big family meal or pizza and popcorn with a film.

Well.....we eat at the table, unfortunately, we rarely eat at the same time or together.

The problem lies in J's after-school activities and John's crazy ass work schedule of late. J's taekwondo practice is at a different time each day, and on Thurs & Fri they are too late to eat afterwards, but too early for John to be home for dinner, so J eats before class, then John and I eat later. Baseball causes the same problem on days we have games, which is twice a week. John & I sometimes pack a picnic to eat during his games, or grab dinner at a local restaurant while he is at taekwondo practice, otherwise we don't get to eat until J is in bed.

On weekends, we usually swing eating together, but not at our table because we are usually traveling and eating out.

We take a walk together most evenings to converse and catch up on everyone's day. Again, it just won't work every day, but usually there is time for a short walk after taekwondo and baseball games. We just can't eat then because it would be too late after I cooked it, and J would be starving during his practice or games, so the short walk works.

Most days at the dinner table. Every week or so we get pizza and have a movie night on the sofa.

We eat at the dinner table as well. If we're not at the dinner table we sit at our kitchen island on the stools. I think dinner time is an important time to sit with family and talk about the day and just enjoy one another’s presence. It's how I grew up; I really enjoyed dinner time with my family.
