Do you think people would have more babies if mat leave was longer in the US?

I would. I had enough hours and everything I needed at my one job, but they had under 50 employees so they replaced me. Major bummer! It was so not fair! Another job I had let me leave and I only took a month off. But I came back.

No pay though, go figure.

I don't think, even if I worked for an employer, that a longer leave would encourage me to have more kids....Of course, I don't think Americans really need any encouragement to have more kids.

That said, pregnancy takes 9 whole months. If a couple is living within their means, they can afford to save up enough during that time to cover a few months at home. Of course, that does not take into account unplanned pregnancies or situations where the mother is required to stop working during the pregnancy due to health concerns. We saved up enough to cover our expenses for one year before we took steps to get pregnant. I am self employed, so it was our only option if I wanted a maternity leave.

I'm not sure why more couples who are planning their pregnancies don't go this route. I'm always a little annoyed when I listen to a couple who planned their pregnancy and took deliberate steps to get pregnant at a certain time complain about not having enough money for the maternity leave they wanted....if they knew they wanted longer than their job paid for, why didn't they just save up for it???

I'm not sure how other countries do it but I think one of the biggest downfalls is maternity leave is unpaid for the most part in the US. I got 6 weeks short term disability and thankfully planned my pregnancy just right that it was the end of our year before we our vacation time reset. So I used my 3 weeks vacation to supplement my income, then it started the new year and used another 2 weeks.

Financially we planned it much better for the second one, I had saved a month and a half salary to cover our bills. With my first financially I had to go back at 2 1/2 months we were drowning in debt but with my second I was able to stay home 4 1/2 months and my job was held under family medical leave.
