What age did your kid go from juice boxes to soda? Just wondering. It started with lemon aide from my hubby and now it has gone to rootbeer. I hate it. But at family functions there is always rootbeer there and he helps himself until I find it. What are your thoughts about soda??? thanks

Well my son is 3 and I still don't give him a lot of juice. A bit. He won't drink straight water so I add about 1 ounce juice to 8 oz of water. A splash. lol

I don't like pop either. Never have. Blech. I'm weird. My hubby drinks a little but not often. He may bring a couple cans to work, but he doesn't really drink it at home. So we rarely have it in the house.

I'm pretty sure my SD (4) gets pop. But the only time I recall my son getting pop is a sip off my husbands take home. He didn't like it and made a really disgusted face!

We have it in the house so my son does get soda but I do limit it. He'll get a couple of sips of ours at dinner time or something like that. As a treat, he'll get a small glass of his own. Or I'll dilute the soda with milk, soda water or cherry juice.

I grew up on a diet for diabetes. Type 1 & 2 Diabetes run in my family, as well as Hypoglycemia. We recently found out that Type 2 runs in DHs family as well. So, I try to enforce the healthy diet I grew up on more than anything. One thing I know is that from time to time allowing a soda as a drink is okay. For younger children, caffeine free is acceptable about once a week. I make Koolaide, and it is gone within 30 minutes most of the time (with a huge mess all over the counters/floor!!!)
I have no problems with the "allowed sodas" at family functions, but only 1 or 2 cups... then juice, water, gatorade, etc.

When I was a kid Soda was only at parties, holidays etc so that was the only time I got it. I have the same protocol now .... But I would not give any child under 2 any soda, just seems wrong not sure why :), I let Claire recently have orange soda at a party but only a small bit. I always have a juice box or two on me just in case we need one!

J started getting Sprite and Root Beer on special occasions about a year ago (he was about 5, I guess)

I don't mind Sprit/Sierra Mist or Root Beer too much because they do not have caffeine, and as long as he's not having it every day, it won't kill his teeth or mess with his diet. We do not have it in the house, he gets it when we are out and about. Usually, he still prefers water, occasionally V8 Fusion.

I don't allow him to have anything with caffeine in it, or anything diet because of the artificial sweeteners (They give all 3 of us massive headaches), if we drink soda, it is the full calorie version. I have an issue with my MIL on this, she ALWAYS buys him diet Sprite, and I will not let him drink it. I know she does it b/c her oldest 2 grandkids are morbidly obese, but I watch J's diet, and he is underweight anyway, he doesn't need diet. They are big b/c their mom fed them nothing but junk all their lives, I don't do that. She also tends to give J a lot of junk food, which I don't like because he eats so little he needs nutrition first, then if he's still hungry after all food groups, he can have junk, but if he gets junk first, he will rarely eat anything else. I don't mind her spoiling him on occasion, but if he spends a lot of time with her it gets troublesome. There are also some junk foods that she does not count as "junk" that I do--like McDonalds chicken nuggets, and sunchips.

Sorry, I went off on a bit of a rant there :P

We don't usually have it in the house, but when we go out the kids will have a glass. I do limit it to only one drink though, because 2 of our kids will bounce off walls if they had any more. So it really is only a treat. My oldest was probably about 4 or 5 before he had it. Our youngest was younger than that. She would have been maybe 2 or 3, just simply because she wanted the same drink as her older siblings, and we felt it wasn't fair to let them have it and not give her a little bit, LOL.

I'm of the opinion that the occasional drink as a treat isn't going to do any harm.

Neither of my kids drinks soda. They both like it but neither of them get it, unless it is a sip or mine or my husband's (if we have it).
That said, both my hubby and I have quit drinking soda, except on rare occasions if we have fast food.

Devin can only have a sprite if we are out.He rarely gets one and the sierra mist has natural sugar and is caffeine free.He is strictly monitored on his sugars and candies. We have a few diabetics in the family so I tend to be anal about that kind of thing.

Mine are still tiny but they have had a taste. They only drink juice at a party or occassionally if we are at my inlaws they will give them freshly squeezed juice before we get up

I don't remember when it started. I do limit it (though they've had it twice in the past week) quite a bit. I never buy soda for the house and for the most part don't get it while we are out. They do go out w/ friends though. In that case I just talk to them about how they shouldn't have it often and shouldn't have stuff w/ caffiene in it.

That's for the girls, at least. My son has had a few sips and doesn't like it yet.

I have a rule that my kids will not be allowed soda until they are 7. It's happened by accident a couple of times (people not watching their drinks, and Corbin steals them), but he really doesn't like it yet. He drinks mainly water and juice right now. I don't want them having caffiene until they are 13, either. It's kind of funny, because Jason drinks a ton of Mountain Dew, and I'm always drinking Diet Coke. I guess you could call the rules I have about soda "loose rules".

My kids have it monitored, I don't know when it changed, we don't often have soda in the house so its only when we eat fastfood, which is not all that often.
