Hot sauce, soap, vinegar.

There are some things I agree with my mother on when it comes to parenting and discipline, but this is definitely NOT one of them.



If I would get mouthy or cuss (after a certain age), my mom would put dawn on my tongue and force me to hold it there for a few minutes.



The only time I remember this happening, it was in front of a lot of people and I felt embarrassed and stupid, standing there with my tongue sticking out with a pool of soap on it, trying not to swallow so it wouldn't go down my throat.



so no, this is not an effective method of discipline in my opinion. Technically it worked and I see why she did it, I see the point of 'wash your mouth out with soap', but I don't think it works. I just didn't want the soap on my tongue in front of strangers again, it didn't teach me anything about cussing or respect. There is no good age to do things like this at all I think. Toddlers are too young, and once they pass that point, it's not going to have the effect you want it to anyway.



I may agree with my mom on time outs, and spankings, and removal of toys/privileges, etc, but definitely not on this.

Please don't "hot sauce parent" with hot sauce, vinegar, lemon juice or any other caustic item....i'm sure these parents didn't INTEND to commit homicide but they killed their adopted little boy. One never knows when there is an underlying medical condition and let's face it if you have to do this to "parent" you aren't much of one. What could a 5 year old do that was this bad? The answer is nothing....he didn't do anything as bad as the parent in this case. I have serious concerns about Focus on the Family putting out a book by Lisa Welchel called "Creative Correction" that advocates this type of "parenting".

i dont agree at all. I dont see how it would be effective in the long run in correcting behavior. I want my children to behave a certain way because its the right thing to do,not because they are afraid. Plus it could be harmful.

Duh they do what they see, they learn from what and who is around them...if they are acting a certain way at a certain age it is the people around them or the envrionment they are in.

we have used vinegar only a little in their mouth then my SK's spit it out and drink a cold glass of milk my DH has done this before for lying and saying curse words in our home

I do NOT agree with it. You have no idea how many ppl tell me to put hot sauce on my daughter's thumb b/c she's a thumbsucker. That conversation usually ends up with the person mad at me lol.

OH HELL NO! I got into a HUGE debate with someone once over hot peppers in the mouth. It is so so SOOOOOO very wrong!

Ummm yeah. If you have to resort to forcing chemicals or horrible tasting substances into your child's mouth, I think it's time to reassess your parenting skills.

My grandmother washed my mouth out with soap once for calling my brother a 'little bugger'.

I still thought he was a little bugger. :/

The old wash your mouth out thing is bull if you ask me. Rather wash your own mouth out if you don't like the language they are using as most likely they got it from you in the first place.

Monkey see! Monkey do! Using things like this as punishment is abuse. There is nothing cute or sweet about making your child ingest something like this. I live by these rules of being a parent. Which is the most effective way to prevent behavior that we don't want our children to have.

If you swear with naughty words, then they will swear.

If you hit because you are pissed off, then they will hit when they are pissed off.

If you run around the house half naked, then they will too.

If you refer to someone as a N@##er, then they will too.

If you see someone with a disability and make a negative comment, then they will walk right up to the person and repeat what you said. EX. "My mommy says you look like a freak and you need to be locked up in the side show."

The morale to all this is you don'twant you kids to do something or act a certain way then you have to lead by example.
