when my daugher was around 5 we were at a restaurant bathroom and she wanted to know why we didnt buy some of those sanitary napkins to use at dinner. I recall telling her those were special lady napkins and I would explain to her at another time since our food was ready. Thought she forgot but she woke me up bright and early the next day to explain.

A couple of stories with my oldest girl, now 4.

1) When she was almost 3, or just 3, I was asking her whether we were boys or girls...conversation went like this:
"Is Mummy a boy or a girl?"
"Girl"
"Is Caily a boy or a girl?"
"Girl"
"Is Liesel a boy or a girl?"
"Girl"
"Is Daddy a boy or a girl?"
"Boy"
"How do you know Daddy is a boy?"
*In my head: "OH CRAP!!!"*
"Coz he has black hair"
*Phew*
(Us girls are all blondish, DH has black hair)
Dodged a bullet with that one.

2) When she was still 3 but closer to 4, she walked into the bathroom to go to the toilet. DH was in the shower (we have open door policy atm to avoid "accidents")
She started talking to DH (I was in the lounge)
"Mummy and Caily and Liesel go wee's sitting down...you go wee's out your long thing"

I had to go to the bathroom to confirm what I had *thought* I had heard!

when my oldest had her son, my son, then 8 wantd to know why the nurse kept talking to us about his penis. I told him so that nicole would know how to clean his penis. he said,duh, everyone has a penis. I said, no, you know girls have vaginas. he responded, thats what ive heard, but I cant be sure, could be a myth or legend. Trying not to literally ROTFL ,or crash the car, I just very calmly said, believe me, Im a girl, we dont have penises. It was so funny and hes seen medical pics of the human body, but there are no baby girls in our family so he has only seen a boy being changed, and he hasnt come into the bathroom with me since he was a toddler. It cracks me up how his mind works.

I have a feeling the comments and questions are going to get tougher. I am a little scared. I dont want to say the wrong thing or scar them for life. I like the pretend not to hear and then distract them approach. I think I will try that next time. It can buy me some time until I figure out what to say. ha ha

My daughter loudly informed the woman in the supermarket checkout que behind us that she was black because she had more melons than we do.
The young black woman looked more than a little shocked and confused so i had to explain quickly that my daughter had really ment she had more Melanin. Thankfully the woman thought it was funny once she understood.

Sexuality isnt as hidden as it was in our day. I had a gay uncle, I thought him and his partner living together was just like Ernie and Bert, till I was about 14 and had an epiphany,lol. If your son is in school that's probably where he heard it. or tv, or radio, etc. Kids nowadays are way more informed than we were. They're also way more accepting of all different kinds of differences, and I think thats a good thing
