So yesterday we are getting ready to go to dinner and I get a knock on my door. It's the neighbor across the street and he proceeds to ask me if I will keep my dog out of his yard b/c he's running up and down the fence and making his dog run and she's cutting her paws. I told him we would do something about it. Then about 30 mins later my husband came in and he came back. This time he tells us that their dog has heart problems and our dog is going to make her have a heart attack and we need to put him on a chain or put him in the pen that the previous owners left which is ten by ten. Let me point out that my dog is a Great Pyranese, and is a huge dog. We told him no we wouldn't be putting him on a chain or putting in a pen that he can barely turn around in, but we are getting one of the invisible fences. Then he gets this huge bag of dog food and hands it to my husband and tells him that they have been feeding him. WTF? No wonder he's coming to your house! Dogs will go where ever there is food. I had wondered how he was overweight but I knew my best friend next door was throwing out scraps so I thought that was why he was so big. I understand it's my responsibility to keep my dog under control but he didn't start going over there until they called him one day (which I saw with my own eyes) and then started feeding him. UGH!!!

I have to agree with Jane and Carolee...

In addition living on 3 or 30 acres is not a good reason to not have a fence. But you did say you were getting a fence right?

Look at it this way if you have a fence all your problems are solved.

No one can feed the dog,

Complain he is on their property

he will be safe

Others will be safe

It really does not matter if other dogs are running loose, what matters is your dog and your dog only. I agree you should not tie up a dog, or put in a small pen. But you should also make sure he is in a safe fenced in area.

Like I said earlier, I have 3 acres in the woods and he never left the yard until they started feeding him. Most all of my neighbors love dogs. I've had to take a few back to their home myself. No one had complained about it. I am going to respect the fact that they don't want him in THEIR yard. I would have no issue if they hadn't been feeding him.

I have to admit, as someone who lives in a leash-law town as well as being involved in animal rescue, I am wondering what your dog is doing running around the neighborhood without your supervision. I have seen too many dogs get hit by cars, shot by angry neighbors, killed by lapping up radiator fluid, or picked up by what we euphemistically call animal control to ever let any of my dogs out running free. Plus, theft of pure bred dogs is on the rise - folks steal them and then sell them on Craig's List.

In addition, since he is a big dog, I would worry about the possibility of the dog getting embroiled in an altercation of some sort that could lead to injury to your dog, another person's dog, someone's cat, or someone's child, followed by lawyers and the dog being destroyed for being "aggressive."

You need a fence that will keep the dog on your property, and keep him there as of yesterday. You are lucky your neighbor loves dogs and has been feeding your dog dog food, and not something with ethylene glycol or ground glass in it.

Good fences make good neighbors!

Ask him why he started feeding your dog, and why he doesn't have a problem with all the other dogs in the neighborhood.

Baylynn~ I'm married to my children's father...I think you have me confused with someone else.
Carolee~I live on 3 acres in the middle of the woods. There's prlly 20 dogs in total in our neighborhood and 90% of them run free. He never left our yard until they started feeding him. The invisible fence we have ordered has not come in yet. I don't believe in chaining dogs up and I refuse to keep him in a ten by ten pen.

Why is your dog running free in the first place?

My husband wouldn't let me speak to him. He knew I was irritated with the situation and was afraid I'd be rude. You can believe if he comes back I will be telling him to quit calling my dog over to his yard and to quit feeding him.

Did you tell him to stop feeding him? That would be a great place to start. Good luck :)
