I may be looking for a receptionist type job but not until next September. Which is ironic because I put a post out there regarding standing out in interviews earlier today. Hubby comes home for lunch and out of the blue asked me if I would like to go back to work after Tarah starts first grade next year. Hell yes............... Just wondering though.....do companies still use receptionists. I would only like to answer the phone and nothing that requires a lot of memory skills. I have issues. LOL So Mark says companies dont have receptionist anymore. Is this true???

He is right. They do have administrative assistants, which require more work than answering phones.

I think so too. I already know a couple of things about it too. Never walk to the tables to fast especailly for the older folks. and never say Party of one, your table is ready. That is just rude. ha ha

Why don't you do something simple like cashier just to get your feet wet in the working world again? Receptionist jobs require a lot of multi tasking and memory. Maybe you should start off slow and see what you can handle?

I was just an administrative assistant and then was a secretary for a big wig in the customer service dept. at Pitney Bowes. Too stressful for me now. To many details I would have to pay attention to. So not happening now. ha ha

He thinks I am going to be able to go back to the same kind of job I had before my head blew. He is sadly mistaken. And he knows me better first hand then anybody. So he is really pulling his own leg. dumbass. lol

I used to work for a phone-answering service. Literally all I did all day, every day, was answer the phones (multiple lines... one for each client), take messages, then deliver the messages either when the client called or at the end of the day. The owner of that business screwed me over because I wanted insurance, but I'd LOVE a job like that again.

I do have a degree in mind numbing. It is my specialty. LOL So sounds like a medical office is out. Oh well. I think I will just try temp jobs and see what happens.

My company has a receptionist who pretty much just answers the phone, not much else. I think she also opens the mail. We have gone through about 1 per year. I think after a while spending 8 hours just answering a phone can be more than a little mind numbing. A few other things to do might help to pass the time. I don't know about where you are, but here to work in a medical office as a receptionist, you need a special diploma.

Even when I was actually working as a receptionist it wasn't just answering phones - I answered the phones, booked services we offered (like typing resumes, dictation, etc), and did filing/photocopying.

I think most of the jobs that are considered to be "receptionist" now usually want you to do more than answer the phones - usually answer questions, file, some data entry, etc.

In some doctor's offices the "receptionist" not only answers the phones and books appointments but transcribes the doctors patient notes and letters.

Here in Canada if you want to be a librarian you usually need a degree, not sure if it is the same elsewhere. If you just want to help out at the library you don't really need much in the way of education, but they usually want you to know the Dewey system so you can re-shelve books.

Not sure if there is anywhere now that would be only answering phones - I actually started retraining in computer information systems after I had been doing reception for a couple of years because all the new jobs had more stuff they wanted you to be able to do.

What about a doctors office making appointments and answering calls?

I think they exist but there aren't very many out there. I had a friend that did that. Although most of them have moved into administrative assistants and office management type positions. Be a school para at your kids school. The hours are perfect, it's pretty mindless work, and if your kid gets sick they don't even have to call you to tell you.

John has a secretary. She answers the phones for him, screens the calls and forwards the approved ones to him. She also does some light filing and stuff. Typing letters and returning emails. I don't know what all she does, but I know it's more than the phones, but the phones are the most important. Anyone could probably do it though--she's got to be like 98 years old!

Lol. Have you thought of librarian? I would like that but I have two little ones at home and a possible soon to be third lol. OR maybe try your kids' school. My mom did that when me and my brother were in grade school , she took a job in the kitchen. Not that these are mindless jobs... I don't think your actually mindless lol takes brains to raise kids :)

I don't know for sure but I don't think so. I haven't seen a receptionist job since I was in high school... about 13 years ago.
