The store is trying to kill me

So everything is nuts this week. My in laws are here, my son is out of school, and we still have a few presents that we haven't gotten. My SIL asked for cash a while back. While my husband and I were less then thrilled, we finally conceded. There was one store that had the debit cards and several other things that we needed. So I get it all and head up to the register. The lady informs me that I have to pay in cash for my debit card I have to buy. Really cash? Seriously I'm not the type of person that ever has more then $20 in cash at any given time. But I was not using a credit card to buy it, I was using my debit card, you know the one that comes straight from your bank account. I have never heard of anything so stupid. The dumbest part was that I could have bought one with a preset amount of money on it without a problem. Of course they didn't have one that would work. Now I have to go wait in line at the bank to get one. An extra errand I don't have time for. I can't believe people can use one credit card to pay for another (not a good thing to do btw) but you can't use a debit card or write a check to get a gift debit card.

Unfortunately, Christy, it won't let you do that, either. What a screwy system, as far as I am concerned!

Can you run the debit card as credit instead? Same concept, it gets sucked out of you account regardless.

a trick which almost always works is to feed the machine with just some cash. Most times it just wants to see cash taken in.

Had the same problem, except I already knew it wouldn't take the debit card to get the reload minutes for the kids phones, so I had cash, but the machine wouldn't take the cash! It took a $20, and then crapped out. So, I tried the card, just in case, and it took.

See if, maybe, that would work next time.

I know they have their reasons it was just the worst possible thing that could have happened at that moment and it's stupid.

Jayce I have to say the mall gift card thing tops mine. That's crazy.

Unless it's cash, they don't know for sure if it will be denied/overdraft or not. It's just a safeguard that most stores have. I know it's frustrating, though.

Some places have stupid rules. I wanted to use a mall gift card to buy some things at one store (in the mall) and was told that I would have to transfer the balance form the mall gift card to a store gift card in order to complete the transaction.

If that didn't make any sense to you while you were reading it, don't feel bad, it didn't make any sense to me while I experiencing it.

Couldn't you just pay for the first transaction and take out cash, then use the cash from there to buy the 2nd thing that needs cash?
