Do you smokers out there get tired of being preached at! Just think as long as I'm not blowing it in your face, really does me smoking bother you so much that you feel the need to preach to me the dangers and that I should quit! I guess I should be flattered that you care so much. so how do you all feel about it?

Emma, I used to work back in the days when it was legal to smoke in office buildings. I was a smoker but NEVER smoked inside the office, only during my breaks when I went outside. BUT, you could seriously get out of the elevator and see the smoke haze, it was gross. Thinking back to that, I can totally understand why they banned it indoors at all workplaces. If all smokers were respectful of others, there wouldn't have to be laws in place, but the fact is, many smokers don't care who they impose their habit on. Some do, but many don't.

I used to work in a country club when i was 17 and smoking inside wasn't outlawed yet. It was banned in dining areas but notthe workers bar. I used to go home smelling like cigarette smoke and I don't even smoke. I did not appreciate it.

I disagree. They don't have the right to determine if their employees are exposed to second hand smoke or not. No-one has that right. if you want to smoke, it's your lungs. But no-one (employer or not) has the right to impose that on someone else.

Oh, and I think it should be up to the establishment on whether or not they allow smoking. It is their business, and they have the right to say yes or no.

It's not illegal here. There are some establishments that are non-smoking, but others aren't. All the bars here have smoking.

I can honestly say that my bartender doesn't mind that I "light up" at the bar. Not only does she smoke as well, she's also my aunt ;)

What irks me about it is some people's ridiculous need to smoke. All they talk about is "need more smokes' can i bum a smoke.. blah blah smoking... . it's fucking sad. If you need to light up every 5 fucking minutes when you wake up, after breakfast, in the car, before work, on lunch break, smoke break from work while you're in the loo, you have a problem. Why don't people realise that this is a serious addiction and just because it's legal doesn't make it any better than other drugs.

"Why can't I have a smoke with my beer at the bar?"

Because the employees in that bar have a right to a smoke free workplace too. You having a smoke in the bar DOES affect other people. That is blowing it in people's faces. You're absolutely right, if it isn't affecting other people it's none of their business. And preaching to a smoker to give up is the last thing that helps them give up. So yes, people should back off. But smokers also need to be respectful of non-smoker's rights, which includes not smoking in that bar, (and here in Australia, within 10 metres of the building doorway so we don't all get wafts of smoke everytime we walk in or outside).

Why cant I smoke at the bar ? Because its my choice to slowly kill myself and I have no right to force non smokers in a public place like a bar to inhale my fumes.

I wouldnt force an adult non smoker to breath it as much as I wouldnt force a child to inhale it, my body my choice and no one elses and since majority of smokers have no fucking consideration anyway it has taken the law to stop them gunking up drains killing wildlife and smoking out public places like bars and restaraunts, my grandmother died of second hand smoke so I know just how lethal it can be for a non smoker , I know a non smoker doing an 8 hour shift in a bar full of smoke is inhaling massive amounts of second hand smoke.

Im a smoker, its my choice so I suck it up , I dont bitch and whinge because of the choice I have made I just do it where I can and try not to let my choices affect others.

I think smoking is stupid, but no... you, personally, smoking does not effect me cuz you don't live here. If I can smell it (and I can smell it when the smoker is too far away to see), then yes... it does personally bother me cuz I'm extremely sensitive to the smoke and will cough and choke so bad that I almost puke.

I don't preach at anyone though. I just try to avoid them as much as humanly possible and hold my breath as much as possible when I do see them.... otherwise... read above about the coughing and choking stuff. ;)

I just wish smoking didn't exist. Banning it everywhere except your home wouldn't help me any cuz most of my exposure is from my neighbors... while we are ALL in our own homes. :(

I think people need to mind their own business. I'm respectful enough to not smoke around you if it really bothers you, so leave me alone.
Where I smoke is my business, not yours. GRRRRRRRR!

I could care less really. I use to be a smoker but quit when I got pregnant. I use to hear about it all the time. I pretty much let it go in one ear and out the other. With the exception of my grandma who was on Oxygen and Meds due to heavy smoking. She always had a way of getting her point across in a way that always left me thinking...hmmm maybe it is time to quit.

As long as I pick up after myself and smoke in designated aeras then it is my right to smoke in public! if you don't like the smell don't stand with the smokers! There are plenty of places other then next to me while smoking for you and your kids to go. Sorry but it is just ridiclious to me that pushing us outside wasn't enough they have to put us in a little box like we're on display!! Fuck what is wrong with me wanting to step outside to smoke hell I really have no choice! Where is freedom in that shit!! Why can't I have a smoke with my beer at the bar? why can't all the non smokers step outside so I don't have to listen to them bitch about it!!!

The only people I've ever bitched at about smoking is my grandfather and my mom.
I lived with my grandparents most of my life and my grandpa is just over a pack a day. I used to have asthma attacks because of the smoke.
Oh sure, he's smoke by a window...but that doesn't help nearly enough. And he smokes the heavy stuff. It was gross.
He tried to quit, over and over, but never really WANTED to, so couldn't.
My mom smokes really light stuff, so it wasn't as bad. I just used to bitch at her when she was smoking around my kids.
I don't like smelling smoke. I get pissy if I smell pot smoke from one of the neighbors. But I'm sure not gonna go up to a complete stranger and tear them a new one for smoking. And the people in my life know that they just need to keep it away from me. If you can't respect me that much, to just go smoke outside or something, then obviously you're a shitty friend and aren't going to be around long anyways :P

I used to have one of those pocket ash trays too Feen. I would totally support a ban of smoking in public except in designated areas (where there would be bins provided and probably someone who came around and cleaned up after the lazy fucks who still won't use a bin when it is right there in their face).

I can understand the emotional attachment - that was my problem for so many years. So much more difficult to combat than the physical attachment.

I smoke and I agree with Jodi, I hate smoking in public...it's gross , it smells they fucking throw their trash everywhere and it drives me mad especially at the beach.

I am going to give up but I have formed an emotional attachment to it , I carry a pocket ashtray if there are no bins around and I do not smoke near people.

Well, it's about more than blowing it in people's faces. Honestly, sometimes I can walk past a place where smoker's congregate, and even if there is no-one there smoking I can smell it and it makes me almost gag.

It absolutely should be illegal in places.

And pick up you goddamn cigarette butts and put them in a BIN. I fucking HATE seeing cigarette butts in the gutters or all over the footpaths. It's disgusting and disrespectful.

I am an ex smoker (was a smoker for 22 years and then quit 2 years ago), and I seriously can't stand the smell of it now.

I'm sick of hearing all the anti-smoker bullshit and I'm not even a smoker. Give it up already, people will quit when they want to not when some preachy non-smoker tells them too.

You know what's the nastiest?

A heavy smoker in a leather jacket! Yuck. The smell just absorbs into the leather and then you get a mix of leather and tobacco smell. Pew! I've gagged before when someone like that was standing next to me in line at a store.

I also find American cigarettes have a much stronger odour than Canadian cigarettes. They smell like cigars to me. I can tell someone is American if they're a smoker, just by the way they smell. lol (I live in a border city btw.)

@Susanne, yeah... I'm pretty skeeved out by public smoking as well. It's weird. I don't smell the smoke when I'm smoking. But when I'm out in public I smell it on other people or when they're smoking and it kinda grosses me out.

I freakin' hated it when they still had smoking in restaurants. I hated eating in a smoky restaurant. Ick. I was all for the ban in restaurants and bars.

And yeah, I get pretty pissed when anyone is smoking in close proximity to my kids.

I'm a self-loathing smoker.

One of the times I was trying to quit. I had moved back home with her after a nasty break up with my ex. I was trying to get on the straight and narrow. Eating healthy, working out, quit drinking, going to church... so logically, to me the next thing was to quit smoking. It felt so wrong doing after getting so healthy in other aspects.

It was Great having my mom there, and really helped in my journey to quit because... any time I wanted to have a smoke I'd have to pass my mom (who knew I was trying to quit and made it her mission to help!) to go to the garage and be bombarded with disappointed looks and comments. Eep.... It was quite the deterrent!

Susanne - posted on 10/04/2011

Sorry I think it should be banned everywhere except on your own property. Im sick of walking along and having some person in front of me puffing away and i have to smell it. Also the people who walk along with a lit one in their hand and i have to grab my son and pull him away before he walks into it.

I don't typically smoke in public with all the bans (within certain perimeters of public buildings) and since I've had my kids and am usually out and about with them.

I smoke on my front porch so I've never really been preached at by strangers.

My mom is a different story! NAG Nag nag. It drives me bat shit. I can't imagine what her husband (who's a smoker) must go through! I know she has to though, she's my mom and cares about my health. But it does make me scream a little inside! Maybe because I know she's right? haha...? o_O

My husband moans about it from time to time too. He was a smoker when I met him but now he rarely smokes at all. Social smoker? Maybe once a month he smokes when he hangs out with his friends. But when he does he chain smokes!

It bugs me no end!!!!!! I was one of the "bad" ums that smoked while I was pregnant but made sure I didn't in public, I didn't want all the comments.
I find that I meet some great people while I'm outside having a smoke. Here in Australia you can't smoke inside anywhere and the best social get together is outside with the smokers!!!!

Yeah I 100% agree! My favourite is when a stranger will approach me to tell me the dangers of smoking! I smoke that doesn't make me stupid, I am fully aware of the dangers of smoking but I like smoking and I'm an adult who makes my own decisions, hence why I smoke!!
