My son is 20 months old and he thinks he can follow his sisters everywhere. My 7 and 9 year olds frequently go outside to ride bikes. I also will let the 4 year old go with them if they stay on our street (which ends in a cul-de-sac). Unfortunately, the baby wants to follow them and throws a complete fit because I won't let him.
Today, he got out the door before I noticed he followed his sisters outside. I found him across the street with my 7 and 4 year old, on his push toy like he was one of the big kids. The neighbor has a girl, age 7, a boy, age 2, and a newborn. My 7 year old has asked to play with their daughter, but is usually given reasons why she can't play.
When I went to get my son, the dad was outside. I first asked how the food was I brought them when they had their baby a couple weeks ago. Then I said I was sorry, and he knows how to open doors. The guy said, "yeah, and he must not like to keep clothes on either. I usually see him outside with nothing but a diaper."
That is a bit of an exageration. I sometimes let my son be outside in just a t-shirt, but he's still a baby. I mean, c'mon. The wife seems nice, but very reserved. I've been around her at the neighborhood playgroup I attend on occasion. I've never met the husband until today. Her husband obviously thinks we are white trash or something.
