Update June 19,2013: I now have 7 children under the age of 12! LOL. I guess I really do have a large family now. ;) http://amazingsix.blogspot to see how we operate!

I think that is different for everyone. Is it anyone that has more than 2.5 kids? Hee hee... I think everyone has a different idea with that.
I have 5 kids under 8 and another on the way. So that'll be six. But I always considered myself a medium size family. LOL. I'm hoping I belong in this group.

My partner and I have a large blended family of 7 and we are constantly told that we are crazy having that many kids lol. I have 3 children from a previous marriage that we have 100% care of, my partner has 3 girls from a previous relationship that we have at least 50% care of and we have a 12 month old daughter together. Sounds crazy and if anyone told me 10 years ago i would have 7 kids i would have died laughing but I wouldnt swap it for the world. We are planning for one more late next next year to make it an even 8....when you have 7 whats one more going to do we figure lol It can be a bit of a handful some days but we have more laughs and love in our house than some do in a lifetime and i get at least 20 kisses and cuddles a day which is a bonus!

thats how i felt too i watch alot of the duggars 17 and counting and thats why i feel blessed even with my patchworkquilt family of 11 i cant live without them

To me: 3 and under is small, 4-6 is medium and 7+ is large. But for most they say 4+ is large, and I guess in this economy it really is. (I have 8 kids plus 6 angels.)

[deleted account]

I think anything over 4 kids is a large family. I have 3 boys, 5 girls and 1 ~angel~, People think my family is huge...lol!

My daughter, has 7 half brothers and no sisters. She has a daddy, her biological dad; a bid daddy, her ex step father who shares custody with me (even though not legally); and a big hairy, hercurrent stepfather; 15 grandparents (vickie, nanny, pop, mamgram, pappy, gramma pam, tom, grandma kathy, pawpaw gary, grandma tric, pawpaw jimmy james, pawpaw eddie, gaga, and another grandfather but i dont know what she calls him and more cousins than anyone can count. She has at least 18 aunts and uncles. Even though there are only ahandful that are really blood related, we have all made it our goal thorugh ending relationshps or marriages to keep the children in our family number one priority. So a large family is what we have.

I always thought more than 3 kids is a large family because 3 is about average. I would say more than 6 is a huge family. I have four kids and it's tough. I don't know how you do it. My grandma had 6 kids and she about went insane. My grandpa was in the air force, so he was gone most of the time.

Most people consider you a 'large' family by child #3 because your kids outnumber your hands!! lol. I think in this country, more than 4 will get you stares and gasps. I have 8 (1 boy 7 girls and the girls are age 8 & under w/2 sets of twins) and I get stopped at least 3 x's each time I go anywhere in public. I get a lot of comments like, "you should have your own reality tv show" and "how do you do it? I can't handle my 2".

I think what really differentiates a big family vs a small family is when you have to do things in very different ways to accomodate your brood. We have sleeping rooms for the kids and a separate playroom. Sleeping rooms are for sleeping and a place for the older kids to get a break from the little ones for some quiet time such as reading. We have a 4 bedroom house, 2 are sleeping rooms (kids age 3 & under bunk w/mom & dad) the playroom and had to forfeit one bedroom to make a clothes room which is a GIANT closet. IF you have a large family, everything is different, from the way you shop, what you drive ,to how you set up your house. If you have 4 mor more kids, you would be considered a large family by most and would benefit from the advice and experience from other moms in the 'large family' group.

Quoting Casey:

I gave birth to 11 children and have two stepsons and am 52 yrs old so doubt whether anymore will come my way. My mind thinks of large families differently than most, I guess. I consider 4 and under a small family. 5-7 as medium and 8+ as large. It's always fun bumping into other large families. Back in May we ran into another large blended family, a yours mine and ours family with 16. We have a sticker on the back window of our minivan with stick figures and I love the looks I get driving. My license plate also says 11 KIDS.

I completely agree with you. I have 10 and not till I had my twins which were #8,#9 did I think I had a large family. I have stick figure's on the back of my passenger van. I love looking in my mirrors at people counting my stick figure's. I have had someone ask me at a traffic light if I had all those kids. I answered yes and she turned to her husband and said I told you. No personalized license plate yet. Not quite done having children yet.

So great to find other large familes! We have 6 children ages 10 to 1 1/2. We recently moved from GA to AL. Where we lived in GA there were several families over 8 children. We were a medium sized family. But here in AL I haven't met anyone with more than 3 or 4. We get alot of comments (a mixture of rude and positive) when we all go out in public. When child #5 was born we had a mini-van. We soon decided to go ahead and get a 15-passenger. Best decision ever! We really don't need one of the seats, so we just take it out and have room for groceries or our stuff when we go on trips. Plus we knew we'd have more kids, so it was like planning ahead!

You'll all laugh, I have three kids and that is considered large here. I have only one friend with 4 and only a couple with three. People ask me if they're all mine too! Wow it sounds busy, loud and fun. I'm an absolute lightweight lol.

Like Brandi, I live in a small town. I think the total population is under 500. The closest grocery store is in a town of less than 1,000. When we take the 10 minute drive to go shopping - my man, my 5 kids and I - other shoppers clear the aisles as if we're a pack of hungry wolves! Honestly, I feel like we haven't reached "large family" status yet, but I guess in this day and age it's strange to have more than 3.

I live in a small town with about 15k people (that is with the two universities here.. probably 5k without) 4 or more is a large family. after child 3, the looks and stares begin. The comments and the ridicule come more often. I have 4 children..11,10,8,6 and I am 5 wks with nbr 5. The other posts are right, transportation becomes difficult. We were pricing a trip to disney and the plane tickets aloner were outstanding. Hotel become costly since we have to get suites with 2 or more rooms. I am worried now because in our home with have 3 bedrooms.

Number 7 was when we began to think of ourselves as being a "large" family. But most people comment if you have more than 3 or 4. Sometimes when I'm out with just the younger 4 or 5 children, someone will inevitably say, "My, you have your hands full!" To which I reply, "Oh, this is only HALF of them!"

We have 10 and I didn't think I had a large family until my twins came #8,#9. I agree with the above poster though when we were thinking of having #7 it meant we had to have a big van. That was a big deal for me but got over it quickly.

I have six children. The oldest is 16, the youngest is 3. I would love to have more, but I don't know if my body will allow that. I have had increasing difficulty and complications with each one. We As for eating out, I would rather have things take longer at a restaurant than do take out. With such a large order, they almost always forget something.

[deleted account]

Well, when I had four children.... I thought that was large.... but then I started meeting more families with 7,8, 9 kids, and it changed my perspective. I now think of less then four as small, 4-6 as medium-sized and 7 or more as a large family.

Why the number 7? Because the world really doesn't let you get by easily with 7 or more. Harder to find a vehicle that you fit everyone into..... we have to use two vehicles to go anywhere...... and it just gets more difficult going out in public with everyone..... it definitely turned up a notch when we had our 7th.

Of course, I'm very excited to have #8 come soon........ I think it's actually easier to have children now than when I was in my 20's having to do it all myself..... I have lots of helpers now. :-)

Hi I've got 5 too and am also expecting no6 on August 18th. My oldest is 12 and my youngest is 2. I don't personally think that we have a large family I think medium but by todays standards (here in England I think the average has gone down to 1.9) we are. When are you due?

I think it depends on where you live, I am in San Diego and having four is a large family. My grandparents live in Utah and 8 and up is considered a large family. San Diego is so expensive that having four is a struggle!

When I was a kid a family of 6 was medium sized and a family of 10 or 12 was large but in today's economy I would say 6 is large. Hope you have a good income cause you have alot of expense with all those cutie pies. Enjoy them. You are a brave woman taking on that many little ones. I hope grandma lives close by to help out sometimes.
