I did it. I live in a very rural area and when I moved, I was 25 minutes to 3 different wards. I asked if I could leave my records (and that of my children) at the old ward. My Branch President asked the Stake President and word came back that it would be ok. I did this for over 2 years before I felt like I should switch. Funny enough, I finally felt like I should switch because the spirit just left me when I went to my old branch. I knew it was time to change when that happened. But for those extra 2 years, it felt very 'right' to still attend in my old branch.
All that said - it did present problems. Being that it is a very rural area and I was out of boundries, visiting teaching and home teaching were more of a challennge... NO ONE was closer than 25 minutes so I was not visited with any regularity. And for me to do my VT was more of a challenge as well. I was given a sister that literally lived on the other side of the branch boundries - over an hour away. We ended up having me be a phone call or letter writing only sister and that worked better.
Hope this helps!

I have known people who have done this but it was only o.k. if there were extenuating circumstances
