Direct Selling, How to go about it?

I have been in direct sales now for 9 years. Some important questions are is the company financially sound, debt free, does it offer a ground floor opportunity, is the product line saturated in the industry, how many consultants do they have, type of corporate support, field support, product return rate, to name a few. I left a jewelry direct sales company after 9 years because the jewelry market became saturated and become more difficult to have others host parties and sign up new recruits. I love the company i am now with because, they are debt free, a unique product line, little industry saturation, ground floor opportunity to grow, quality product and amazing support from corporate and the field. You can go to the BBB or the Direct Selling Association to check out weather or not a company is legit. I did a ton of research 5yrs ago before I found one that was a good fit for me. The other thing I would look at is the product or service something people need and will spend money on in this tough economic time? Marie, Hopefully you have found a business already :) Your post was in May and it's now Nov. You've received lots of great advice (and many offers too). Bottom line, find a product you love madly, one you would use/take even there were not a pay plan attached, then 'shop' upline for a dedicated, long term mentor; realize ANY business takes time, invest in growing yourself, and report back how you're doing! Good luck! There are tons of excellent opportunities that are out there! If you've not already, you WILL find one.

Hi Marie,

I hope to provide some information that will help you.

When starting your own business, you have to look at what its going to take for you to market your business. You should consider current trends, what people want, what people need. We are in a recession, you may love the product that you are trying market to other people but do you think most other people will? If you had the money to open a store, what would your store have in it? You would try to find a product that would appeal to most average people, not just a select few. You have to believe in what you are doing and have a passion for it and when you start a business there are so many things to consider. I was with a jewelry company many years ago, I LOVED the jewelry, but it was expensive and I had to convince people why they needed it. In today's economy that is very difficult right now. I spent a fortune on the kit and then 6 months later they retired most of what I had and then I had to buy new jewelry. This was a vicious cycle every 6 months, they were retiring jewelry and I had to find a way to get rid of that and buy more. Then I had to buy catalogs, order forms. I spent WAY more than what I took in. Other people are very successful at it so it can be done. At the time I did not have children but even then trying to book parties every single weekend was difficult. Again, you just have to decide what its going to take for you to grow your business.

About two years ago I started looking into starting a home based business. Because of my previous experience at my failed jewelry business, I spent a lot of effort this time around researching a good business model. I researched companies and looked at opportunities with an open mind. I sat down and made a "wish list" of things that I wanted in a business and things that I did not want in a business. 1. I did not want to do parties (I have a child now and a husband that works a lot and that is just not feasible) so I knew I wanted to work strictly from home 2. The product had to be something that people NEEDED and USED - a consumable product 3. The products had to be affordable 4. the products had to be safe and green as health and wellness is something that I am very passionate about 5. the compensation plan had to provide residual income, I needed money that I could count on monthly 6. I did not want to take orders, stock inventory, make deliveries - my customers had to shop directly with the company 7. The products had to be refundable - if I hated the business and products after 2 months could I box it all up and send it back 8. the company had to be BBB accredited and 9. They had to be in business for at least 15+ years. I did not want some fly by night company.

When I had my "wish list" completed I set out to find a company that could meet or exceed my expectations. My time and money is valuable. It took me a year but I finally found a company that fulfilled my wish list. I highly recommend that you get a business plan together and do your homework on any company that you look into. See if the company you are looking into meets YOUR list of expectations. I started my jewelry business because I loved the jewelry but I quickly discovered that it was a hard product for me to market to others. I can't be successful if I can't market the products and sometimes our personal excitement is not enough. Good luck with your business search and let us know how it is going for you.

Hey Marie, Did you find a business opportunity for you? If not here is some tips that might help. First step check out a few business that interest you. See what they have to offer. Also interview the people that are showing you the various opportunities. This person is going to be your business partner so you want someone who you feel a sense of trust and rappor with. Ultimately they will be the ones guiding you in the right steps to succeed. Who you choose as your enroller, mentor, trainer will derfinitley be instrimental in building your business . You need to feel a sense of trust and belief that person will be there to help you. Picking the right company for you that has products you can be passionate about and picking a good mentor will increase you chances of success in what you choose. Look for a company that has been in business for at least 5 years and that has a good track record. You should have to pay more than $250-500 for a start up kit. Make sure the start up fee is refundable with a trial period. Ask yourself when you are evaluating products, what is my target market and it this something that people would still be buying in hard times. Good luck in your search. Hi Marie,

This is a normal feeling. I understand where you coming from. When Scentsy was introduce to me I didn't sign up right away but I just knew I wanted to do this. Like many I was also looking for something to do and was ready for the corporate world no one was hiring. A blessing of disquise Scentsy was introduce to me in December. I then signed up in February of this year two things that drew my attention 1) $99 to start your own business & my sponsor showed me how I can earn that right back and 2) the maintenance was not bad either $150 to stay activate every 3 months. I'm new to the circle of mums also, Before having my adorable son Hunter i was a meatwroker, now i stay at home with my son and have my own direct selling business with Arbonne. Hi Marie,

I always say the products should be able to sell themselves. Look at it like this...you'd rather provide a much needed service/product than SELL a product. If people can relate to you and trust you they'll buy from you. They see you as the expert for whatever you're offering. It sounds like you're on the right track by doing your research. I'd also suggest writing down 3 goals that you want to achieve...either long term or short term. Make them attainable but not too easy. As far as succeeding, get your name out there using every avenue possible. Your local Chamber of Commerce, trade shows and bridal shows could all be great business boosters. My goals were making time for myself, paying off credit card/school debt and buying a brand new car. After doing all my research I decided to do Slumber Parties because it seemed like fun, I liked the products and their overall message of woman empowerment. I've already reached my first goal and have half way completed the second. You just have to choose the opportunity that fits your goals and makes you happy. And don't get discouraged if it isn't easy at first. You've got to put in a little work to be successful at whatever you do!

Absolutely find something that you LOVE! I worked with many different home businesses and it was not until I found something that I could really believe in that I have had success. For me, the things that I like are kind of 'silly', but I love it!
If you can make AT LEAST 25% commission that is something to look into. Also, a web site that your customers are able to purchase the product directly from is a HUGE benefit! One of my businesses allows this kind of shopping and it is very beneficial. You also may want to think about the kind of people that you live close to and who you will be contacting. Are they well off? Middle class income? Etc. Make sure that the products have a fairly large price range. Is there something for $10 along with the $50 items? This will insure that EVERYONE can purchase something no matter where they are at financially. Fundraising is a HUGE thing right now...see if you can find something that either has a fundraising program with the company or make sure that you make enough of a profit that you can offer fundraisers by giving part of your profit back to the organization.

Well Congratulations on deciding to start your own business. First off I suggest investigating several companies just by doing a google search. Talk to other consultants. Find a company/product that you love and go from there. Enlist friends and family to host parties or look at books which ever is best to promote the products you are selling. There are lots of great companies with great products that practically sell themselves. I hosted many Epicure parties and my friend and family were getting me to order from my consultant before I decided to sell it, who doesn't love to eat and it's like groceries so people need to restock. So maybe host a party of two of your own first to see if it works for you and if you have a market.

Find something you love and sell that! I'm a Kaszazz consultant (stamping, scrapbooking and cardmaking) and I joined 2 years ago. Because I love scrapping, it's been very easy for me - and I think that's the big thing - love what you sell & really believe that it's a great product. Most companies have plenty of support for their consultants and there are heaps of websites where you can get ideas.

They are right...you need to believe in what you are doing. when You are passionate about what you do, people are going to want what you have! The company I am with is called RELIV. It is a health and wellness company and is a member of the Direct Selling Association. The products are consumable, which is another thing you want to have. It is an international business, with 14 countries to work with. There is endless support from others in this business. Your start up is as low as $40. The products have changed people's lives for the better...they get their health back. With Health Care these days, people are looking for alternatives. These are things that peaked my interest. With any business you are looking into be sure to check their rating with the Better Business Bureau as well as The Direct Selling Association. There is nothing better than having your own business with products you really believe in. I work with a direct selling company that I absolutely love!! Hi, Marie. Regardless of the product you're selling, the way to get started is to make a list of your friends and family. Then, expand the list to include their friends and family that you know. Once you've signed up with a company, let everyone know. You could even ask them to host a "party" for you in their home, or host your own, and give the guests a chance to browse catalogs and see the products for themselves. You'll also have to talk to the people you come across in your daily life in order to continue growing your business. I've sold art with Artistic Impressions/Elegant Trends, and I'm currently selling Avon (which I LOVE), and the only difference is the product.
