You are so right! I'm in a bi-racial relationship and my son is half-hispanic. I desperately want him to learn Spanish and English so he can have better job opportunities. Its just that I don't speak Spanish (i know the basics) and my fiance speaks both English and Spanish, but our home is mostly English speaking. I'd love to learn ways to help teach him Spanish easier.

I remember my grandmother refusing to speak to us in English and saying you will thank me later..and I do! Two languages are great. And I hear the one parent one language is best. I find a lot of kids that know Spanish dont speak it though?

I speak all Spanish all the time to my almost 2 yr old and 3 1/2 yr old kids. Dad and everyone else speaks English (we are following the "One Parent One Language" model). They both understand it but speak it about 25% of the time. As long as its in there somewhere, I am happy- I hope they will embrace it more later in life like I did :) There are some good baby/toddler board books on Amazon. Kids are blonde/blue eyed everyone thinks its funny to hear them speak Spanish! It makes me sooooo happy!

My daughter's father and i are fluent in Spanish and English. Since her birth we agreed that she would learn both and another language. however, now that she is 3, she speaks mostly just English. Our fault, i think (i realized we communicate with her mostly in eng.). It truly saddens me. We are trying to get her back on the Spanish train, so I hope that it is not too late!

I try to speak as much as I can in Spanish, but my husband speaks to her only in English and in daycare she's only getting English. My daughter is about to turn 2 and she counts in Spanish, she knows some songs in Spanish and understands a lot of it. However, it doesn't seem to be enough when our other relatives accuse us of not teaching her the right way.

That is a good thing girl as my 14yo son didnt want to learn spanish but is now learning since that is what we really speak to our 9mth old. Its so important and a great advantage to teach our kids both languages.

My kids are much older, but they both grew up learning Spanish and English. Each had their own things and each handled learning Spanish in different ways. The oldest was the easiest. The second child fought me tooth and nail not to speak Spanish, but I luckily continued speaking to him in Spanish and he finally got it when he entered school and I placed him in a Spanish immersion program. I'd love to chat with you more about this, as I feel very strongly that our children should speak more than one language.
