Although there are things you can do to take the edge off, if it's bad, I would recommend taking him/her in asap just to be safe - there are a lot of things it can be that can get worse,
There is this stuff called numotizine ( the product excerpt reads: NUMOTIZINE was first manufactured in 1905..., by Dr. Samuel Gotcher, because of the need for a solution to pneumonia, which was prevalent those days. Dr. Gotcher patented Pneumo-Phthysine, NUMOTIZINE, a medication for the treatment of pneumonia, bronchitis, colds and related conditions in the form of a poultice or cataplasm for external use. www.numotizine.com) Iit's a paste you apply warm and it really helped to get things moving while I was recovering. My mom used to use it on us as kids for chest congestion, it's very soothing n safe for little 1's. I used it when my son was littler n had croup, as it can turn chronic & become asthma & it worked that same night.

go naturally - make some tea.
ginger root, lemon, boil it, stir in some honey & lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
you can also add these little balls im not sure what they're called but you can find them at any latin american grocery store. if you dont have any of that. try mixing lemon, ginger and cinnomen tea, and put in some honey (and freshly squeezed lemon if available)
try adding more onions, garlic and chives into your meals, they're great immunity boosters.

Carmen, hopefully you got your answer. My son just had a cough, and unfortunately the doctor's don't recommend cough medicine to children under the age of 3, and then still it is iffy. If your child is still coughing, try a humidifier, that seemed to work for me.
