It varies so much. As a consultant for an educational children's book publisher, I have seen all kinds of results. The key is to make sure you read with your kids daily. My daughter is 6 and has been reading since she was 4 and is now reading books on a 4th grade reading level. However, my son is 4 and although he loves to be read to, he has no desire to put the work into reading himself. I have met parents with kids like my daughter and those with kids who are 7 to 9 and struggling. Another thing to note is that they need to want to learn to read. So wait until they are showing signs of wanting to read. If you force them to do it, they will feel like it is something they have to do instead of something they want to do. Have books in baskets or some other container in easily accessible areas around the house, not just in their rooms. If they have easy access to a book, they are more likely to pick it up. And last but not least, have books that interest them. If it is about a topic they find interesting, they are more likely to want to read about it. I hope this helps. Good luck!
