Baby will not take the spoon

My baby boy does not like to eat off the spoon. I have been giving him small pieces of bread or yam to eat as finger food, but the options are limited as he has only just sprung his first tooth. Any ideas of what a toothless baby can eat for fingerfood (other than cookies) or how to get him to take a spoon? I have tried many different foods with different flavours and textures.

My daughter is doing the same thing at 10 months and only has 1 tooth.  She eats everything with just the one tooth.

My Son is going through the same thing too right now. He has 8 teeth and will have a tantrum to see if I'll give in and give him pieces to eat himself rather than taking the spoon food. Canned fruits and vegetables without added salt or sugar cut up a bit are really mooshy. Shredded cheese or cheese strings he LOVES! Shredded chicken, roast, or any meat really he's ok with. Mind you he has more teeth.

you might want to try diced bananas as they are fairly mushy....

try letting him play with/chew on a spoon without food to familiarise himself with it. just keep watch he doesnt poke it in too far. place his hand in the centre of the spoon should help with that. by thinking its fun, he might not hate it so much. good luck!

Hi, my baby is 11 1/2 months.  She only has 2 teeth and she has been eating solids for almost 3 months.  She would have fits everytime I tried to give her my home made baby food or jarred baby food.  I kept trying the spoon, as soon as I gave her something I thought she could have the tears would stop and she would eat and eat and eat.  She now eats basically everything that we eat.  Different types of pasta noodles cut up so they are big enough for her to pick up but small enough that she doesn't choke.  Meat (chicken, beef, pork) of all different cuts and cooked differently.  Veggie that are cooked well (she loves....broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, peas, green and yellow beans, peppers etc.  The fruits that you can give your little one is endless as well.  Your little one probably wants to feed himself.  Start out with veggies and fruits (fruit was hard for Isabella to grab at first because they are slippery), cubes of cheese.  Then try to give him small pieces of meat.  Kids love bread, pizza crust (great for the gums)  With my little one....on days that she would be picky about the food....sad to say but she loves grilled cheese sandwiches, I cut them up small so she can pick them up.  As long as they are eating and its not junk, thats what matters to me.  I always give veggies with it, thankfully she never turns them down.  Good luck

I get thick slices of ham and cheese at the deli and them cut them up into small cubes at home. My son also likes veggies (peas, corn, carrots, potato bits). Bread is definitely a big winner.

My son loves broccoli. Steam it up till falling apart by it's self, any veggy you can steam well, such as peas and cauliflower etc. . . slightly seasoned potatos are good. My son has 8 teeth, but the # of teeth doesn't really matter , they can gum their food. As for meat, since my son no longer wants to be fed by a spoon, unless it is cereal, if you have a mini food processor (I use a coffee grinder that I never use for coffee) cook some meat for him and just finely shed it, maybe add just a touch of gravey (if you have drippings in a pan you can make it from) I do this just to keep the meat from getting dry. Leave dolops of this on his tray and he will get it into his mouth. My son and I only recently discovered this, but he happy this way. Also spaghetti is good, just cut it into small pieces.

Good luck.
