My son will be 1yr old on the 7th and had been walking since 10months, lately he has been climbing onto EVRYTHING! small chairs, to tables to his old walker, to activity table things at kindy. Any ideas on how to stop him climbing, I dont want to have to take things away and at kindy it's not an option

I agree with Emily, I think it's un-stoppable! My daughter turned 1 at the end of March, and started climbing the day before that. At first I tried to stop her, but she was determined. Finally I let go of some control, and let her do it. Within the week she figured out how to get down feet first (instead of head first, which was scary!!), and also learned that she has to be careful when she's climbing! Just make sure you take the heavy things out of reach, and that theres nothing they can pull down on themselves. I also put pillows behind the couch, because she gets up there too, and I'm scared she's going to do a head dive down there! lol, yes, it's pretty interesting when they start climbing!

HI THERE MY BOY TURNED ONE ON THE 27TH AND HAS BEEN CLIMBING SINCE HE WAS 7MNTH WE HAD TO PUT LOCKS ON HIS WINDOWS AS HE CLIMBS UP ONTO ANYTHING AND WILL TRY TO GET OUT. FROM THE DAY HE STARTED DOING ALL THIS WE JUST MADE HIM GO BACKWARDS AND IT HAS SEEMED TO WORK FOR THE FIRST WHILE WE PUT A FOAM MATTRESS IN FRONT OF THE COUCH SO IF HE DID FALL IT DIDNT HURT BUT HE DIDNT LIKE , AND YOU CAN NOW GET XTRA TALL KID GATES THAT OPEN LIKE A GATE AND CLOSE BEHIND YOU THEY ARE GREAT . AND JUST MAKE SURE ANYTHING THAT IS HEAVY AND CAN FALL IS FIXED TO WALL . OTHER THEN THAT I THINK IT IS UN-STOPPABLE

HA! Love the helmet idea!! priceless :) My lil man is doing the backwards things, although now he is a bit taller he can slide off the couch front-ways... Oh the joys

My dad reccommended I teach my son how to climb down backwards off furniture, i just started turn him backwards when he crawled towards the edge of things, and now he knows to turn around and climb off the things he's climbed onto. he doesn't climb some of the things other parents have mentioned (yet!), but if he does, I'll help him to climb back down so that hopefully he'll be able to get up and down by himself sooner! Good luck to you all - oh, my only other suggestion is helmets!

i have the same problem my little man was one last month but he is not walking yet even so he startied to clime the stairs the other day so i put a gate up then today he climbed on top of the toy box his dad told me to remove it .

but as a mum of four i dont think you should take things away most of the time the child will learn what they can and cant achive as long as they are not gna come to any harm whats rong with leting them climb they have to lurn some time and they could just as easily fall and hurt themselfs without climbing its just part of growing up and there using there legs to do it so they are basicly helping themselfs to learn to walk im not sure if any one would agree with this but u cant move ur sofa and chairs out can u and belive me int wont be long before ur babies learn to climb on then

I'm pretty much at the point where I just let her climb up and down the stairs and on/off furniture, within arms reach of course, so she can learn how to do it herself and I won't always have to jump up every time she comes near them! My now 4 1/2 year old son had done the same when he was her age- even stood up on the seat of his little ride-on toy and raised his arms up (like ta-daa!!) BEFORE he was walking! My oldest daughter was always so cautious though, and I never had to worry about any of this stuff with her. I guess Bridget is following her brother's lead :) Fortunately for us, we have had no broken bones (knock on wood) or serious injuries with any of the kiddies (7 years and counting...) All the same, they sure do get my heart rate going!

I have the same problem with my little guy.  Unfortunately, I have had to remove any and everything that he could possibly climb on.  I tried distracting him with other toys, but he's one determined little boy, and distraction was not possible.

About 4 weeks ago he climbed onto his little brothers toddler arm chair.  He fell and fractured his tooth.  It was horrible.

Wow Charmaine! Your little girl sure is determined! Cooper is tall enough now to tippy-toe to get anything off the table that he wants (bugger!) And he has now started trying to climb out of the bath tub too... I'm nervously awating the fall from the cot---- Doesn't look like anyone is able to help us!!

I'm interested in hearing responses to this one too! My daughter turned 1 on the 7th also, is NOT walking, but is also climbing onto EVERYTHING! She climbs up to the dining room chairs so she can reach stuff on the table, climbs the stairs when we don't have the gate up, tries to climb OVER the gate and gets halfway there, climbs into her walker, uses my headboard as a ladder to reach the chest next to it, and even up the ladder on my son's bunk bed when I thought it was safe to leave her in there with him while I was going potty! Taking things away is definitely not an option when it's furniture at home that she climbs on!
