I was just wondering what other mom's thoughts were on making the transformation from Formula to Milk... how are you going to do it and at what age???

My daughter had a check up with her doctor a week and a half ago and he told us we could switch her to whole milk at any time now. That day we went out and bought some and gave her a bottle of it before bed. Next morning I tried to give her formula and she would not drink it. All she wanted was whole milk and thats all she's been getting since. We have half a can of formula (powder) sitting in our cupboard. It has cut down her milk intake greatly too. With the formula she was needing 4-5 6oz bottles a day. Now she gets 2, sometimes 3, 6oz bottles of whole milk a day.
My oldest wasnt put a whole milk till she was almost 2. On her first birthday we threw out the formula and she started drinking soy milk and goats milk. I cant have milk products so I didnt want to take to much of a chance with her. But shes been fine with milk.
My 11 month old has been on milk based formula so I knew it'd be no problem to switch her to whole milk. (my oldest had a soy based formula)

My doctor said that normally they don't recommend switching until they are about a year old. However, my son eats regular food now and doesn't even like to drink that much of his formula that I think in the comin weeks I'm going to begin switching. On that note, we also know that he isn't allergic to milk, and he's been eating baby yogurt for over a month now, and he loves eating cheese too.
I think it is going to solely depend on your child and how comfortable you feel beginning the big switch.

I talked to my doctor because I just found out I'm pregnant again but I'm still nursing. They said I could do cow's milk for lunch and dinner but do formula for first thing in the morning and right before bed. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my daughter on a regular eating schedule. any advice??

My doc was adamant not to switch until one year old. There are extra vitamins and nutrients in formula and breast milk that the baby needs. Their growth is so high that first year, it makes sense to me.

Hi Gina,
My little guy still doesn't consume enough foods to make up the nutrition that formula offers. He may stay on formula for longer than my other kids because of this. Read to formula can nutrients and make certain you can replace that before the big switch. They are almost old enough to tolerate it but I don't think that is the only consideration. Hope this helps.

My son will be nine months next Thursday and I was thinking of waiting a month or so then giving him his morning bottle cows milk and the rest (he only has 3 or 4) formula. Gradually increasing the cows milk until he's totally on it. My grandma taught my mum and mum told me that milk is pasteurised but not sterilised so you should put it in a pot and not quite bring it to boil but just until it starts little bubbles and a skin forms then you take it off DON'T BOIL it. Cool it, take the skin off as it will block the teet and then pour it into the bottles and stick it in the fridge. I actually did that a few months ago but my son didn't take to it as much, yoghurt sometimes is still too much for him. As I said I'll try it again when he's 10 or 11 months. See how you go!

you shouldnt switch from formula to normal milk until they are a year old. formula for now incorporates most of their nutrition even though they are eating solids. but later on you could try and mix whole milk and formula together and gradually put more milk than formula

I actually started about a month ago putting 3 ounces formula to 3 ounces whole milk. I didn't ask the Dr I just did it on the advise of my mom. My daughter has had no problems so far. I'm considering soon, adding more whole milk.

I switched my son at 12 months from formula to homo milk. my doctor said to start putting say 3 ounces milk and 5 ounces formula and eventually keep adding more milk so that it becomes all milk. and my son was on soy formula and took to homo milk just fine.
