Hi, my daugher "likely" has a milk allergy and is on Isomil Soy Formula? She was very gasey, so her pediatrician advised to change her to Soy and change to a Nuk nipple to reduce gas. So we are not 100% sure that it's an allergy. Any advice on when I should introduce whole milk to her and see if the allergy is there?

fyi..I went through the same thing with my daughter. She was throwing up, had really bad gas pains, stinky farts that could clear a room, and was constipated or runny poops. At 3wks they took her off similac and told me to supplement my breast milk with Isomil Soy formula. 2 weeks later I went to the breastfeeding clinic and they said not to give the baby soy milk especially with her being a girl because it has estrogen in it that isn't researched enough the effects of it on reproduction etc later on in life. So we took her off that and moved her to lactose free similac. It was amazing. Her throwing up stopped, her farts disappeared and she pooped normally. She would have burps and regular spit ups but wasn't in pain anymore. We loved seeing the results. So then they said to reintroduce milkbased formula at 4 months and if she reacted to it then it was a lactose issue. they said that babies usually don't have an allergy to milk just an intolerance or a lactose problem. Once she was off the boob (stopped when we went to lactose free milk) and on lactosefree milk everything cleared up. We decided to try her at 4 months back on milk based but bought Parents Choice from Walmart with reduced iron. She took to it nicely and we haven't had issues since. All symptoms are gone. No tummyaches, no spitting up, no throwing up, normal poops etc. It is great! She also was put on cereal at 6 weeks because she couldn't fill up with the soy or lactose free milk. Then at 6 months she started to eat table food puree'd and now she eats almost everything we do that she should. We don't give her dairy, nuts, corn, honey, eggs etc..the stuff babies shouldn't have but regular vegetables, starches, meat is fair game. She loves it. We tried giving her some cheese and she got terribly sick again with a bad tummy ache. So we will try again slowly. I wouldn't start with whole milk yet..try her with milk foods in small quantities and monitor how her reactions on a chart. Then increase it and if she doesn't have a problem with it then try whole milks. But every child is different so Good luck.

My son was diagonsed with milk/soy allergy at 3 weeks old. He was put on a hypo allergenic formula. He was on that until 9 months old when I got a call before his 9 month check up that is was ok to switch him back to soy. He is doing great on soy. I would wait until you doctor gives you the ok to switch back.

Good Luck

You should wait to add milk until your daughter is 12 months old or older. If you feel that the doctor might be wrong, you do have options. You can request that some allergy tests be done. You can have the skin test kind or blood draw to test for food allergies. We were able to have our daughter tested with the blood test and it did reveal many allergies. My daughter was on Nutramigen until she was 18 months old sue to severe allergies. Best of luck!
