Just wanted to say ... have you tried the grow bags/sleeping bag? They are amazing. my boy William just wouldn't sleep with blankets on him. That is the only way we can keep him warm and we are assure in the night that he is warm as well. Good to see some South African's on here. I am originally from South Africa, now living in New Zealand for the last 7 years.

We use a "sleeping bag" - imagine a sleeping bag with arm and neck holes - check out the website above. The bags are temperature rated, so you use the appropriate one for the temperature of the room (over winter, we use the 2.5tog rated one). Matilda kicks her covers off at night, and used to wake because she would get oo cold - so we got one of these, and it solved the problem for us! Not too sure if you can get them in South Africa, but you could always mail order one.

Hi Lindie
YAY! Another South African!! I have the same problem with my little girl, but she's sleeping in her own room, so its harder to keep tabs on her temperature. I found that those fleecy blankets have static, so they'd shock her if she moved around too much. We put her in long sleeve body vests with a toweling babygro to avoid the static, and "wrap" her cot in blankets so that there's no place that the cold air can get in besides the top. We also use Anna's idea of a "pocket", with a Woolworths receiving blanket as the pocket bit, and then a regular baby blanket from Ackermans on top. We also got a little hotwater bottle with a teddy bear cover which she just loves - R50 from Dischem or Westpac - just dont put boiling water in it...

My son dose the same thing i just make sure he has fleecy pjs on.

He will get the hang of the blanket soon enught, if your realy worried get a hot hug from Clicks R149, im sure you have seen them on TV very cute.

often as perents we wrap them up too warm learnt that with my first one, he could be getting to hot.

Another vote for Aimee and Cindi's ideas of the sleeping bags/sleep sacks...I think they may be the same idea.
I also agree with Chelsea...everyone has their own personal preference when it comes to temperature when they sleep...I'm Canadian too (though I live in Ontario and not very far up north, so Chelsea's definitely got me beat) and I've heard many stories of babies just being quite happy without a blanket in our winters (as long as the room is a reasonable temperature).
Perhaps some Mom's in your area in South Africa also have some good ideas (and something you can find and incorporate locally).

I'm in Alberta Canada and cold winter is the name of the game. My Son kicks off any blankets we put on him as well, PLUS he HATES wearing sleepers. Really we keep the heat around 22 celcius, he has the option of a blanket if he wants it, and away he goes.

I know the house isn't freezing, so if he wants to go blankie/pj less so be it.

I know I normally kick of the blankets in my sleep too and have survived many many years. I think just like people it's preferance.

Here in the US we use sleep sacks. It is basically a wearable blanket. In the winter my girls wear a fleece one and now that it is summer we have cotton ones. good luck!

You can try short sheeting. Fold the blanket in half and tuck it in at the sides of the bed so it makes a pocket. This way he is inside of the "pocket" of the blanket and can't kick it off since its tucked in on the sides. It should come up to his waist to allow some freedom of movement. Good luck.

my 15 month old always kicks off any covers. we swear by the baby sleeping bags/grow bags. that way he is always covered no matter how much he wriggles.

when is was winter here in england we put a wheatwarmer bag in his cot to keep it warm. they are good coz dont get too hot to touch and they cant burst like a hotwater bottle.
